Cat Stevens is now suing Coldplay for copyright infringement on the same song Joe Satraini did, Viva La Vida.
I think this can get pretty interesting. I am a Cat Stevens fan but never heard of this song.
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmOXNlID2Xs]YouTube - Cat Stevens - The Foreigner Suite Part II[/ame] Doesnt get interesting untill about 5 mins through
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tWjja5HIWU]YouTube - Joe Satriani *IF I COULD FLY* & Coldplay *VIVA LA VIDA* Experimental Morph/Remix[/ame] this is a cool mash up, I think it could be a single haha.
So if Cat is suing Coldplay doesnt he have the same right to sue Joe? In a guitar forum like this we obviously have a bit of a bias torwards Joe, you have to love the guy, and If I could Fly is some of his best material, but I think under the same circumstances there is a case. I think it is very possible it is all coincidental, it is just too hard to tell, but Cat Stevens has deffenitly gone and mucked things up even more.

Wow, that mashup actually makes coldplay more listenable. If Joe wasn't already doing Chickenfoot, he should join them. haha

Joe in Coldplay....oh god that would be a sight....I think they would be a pop version of Dethklok and slowly start to take over the world with their amizingly catchy melodies combined with godlike tasteful shredding.

I don't get it. Its really just a typical sort of Latin groove.
Imagine every started suing each other for using blues 12 bar progressions??

What bloody awful song - we should all sue CAT for releasing it ! :D

Too funny! For those of you not brave enough to sit through Cat's song (I wish I hadn't)...the part in question starts around the 5 minute mark. It does have the same chord progression as the Joe and Cold Play songs. Now, if I could only get 5 minutes of my life back...

Short answer for me is that all three of the songs have a very cliche chord progression and a very obvious (albeit lame) melody over the top. All three songs blow serious chunks.

+1,

but doesn't this belong in the "General music discussion" section?

Viva la Vida is by far the best of the 3 songs IMO. And the Cat Stevens song sounds totally different -- unlike the Satriani lawsuit, I think this one is almost totally unfounded. There are only 12 notes after all.

This whole thing is getting out of hand. These kinds of law suits happen all the time...

Colplay are just idiots who ignored Satch in the first place...so Satch decides to serve them at the Grammys...big media hoopla ensues and a relatively easy process gets mucked up.

At this point, Coldplay just wants to save face for being morons in the first place. And I bet Cat Stevens and Satch already settled...otherwise he'd be suing Satch and it would make the Satriani vs. Coldplay suit completely moot...

OR...Cat Stevens is a complete moron...

The thing between the Satch/Coldplay issue is that the rhythm matches perfectly and the harmony and melodies are very close, while the Cat's song has a little resemblance in part of the melody and the harmony, not the whole thing, and there's nothing there in the rhythm. They all might be an unfortunate coincidence, but I think Satch has a case for suing Coldplay because he tried to contact them and he was ignored. I don't know about this guy.

I still think it's funny how much hate Coldplay gets on this forum and others. I think they're great.
