Another Trussrod question - Sorry Ya'll

So this tired old computer tech (although it's been years) thinks "Hey, I can do that. Certainly something as simple as adjusting the trussrod." And you're right, it doesn't get much easier (thank you industrial engineers). However........

I found I could turn the wheel (clockwise) with my fingers. Now, my fingers aren't that small and they certainly aren't that strong. So I'm thinking this shouldn't be.

Any suggestions? And my apologies if I'm out of line and should just call customer service.

oh, and the current height at the 12th fret is 4/32 for both the E and G strings. I get some fret buz at that height.

Too Funny BP. However, come next January when I'm opening up one of those jars, yum yum. And have you ever watched these young ladies on the soccer field? We have a local University (U of Portland) who kicks Santa Clara's, and most certainly Cal State Fullerton's collective butts.

Sounds like it's been loosened up WAY too much. What sort of strings are on it?

Yes, the wheel was all the way out and could be spun using my fingers. Action is, shall I say, a bit high. The issue comes when I tighten the rod (which lifts the fretboard) I get fret noise (from the next fret up).

String height from top of pickup is spot on.

Only occurs on E and A strings.

Any ideas?

I'll call tomorrow and get a better feel for what you got going on.

In the meantime, check relief:

1. fret 1st and 12th. A capo helps in this.
2. check string height at 6th fret (while fretting 1st and 12th)
3. should have no more than a credit card worth of height. From setting up EBMM's I've gotten lovely results with business card height or less, all the way to a straight neck.
4. With strings open, check for fret buzz from 6th on up to 22nd.
5. If fret buzz from 6th and higher, time to check saddle height.

Checking saddle height:

1. after checking relief check height of strings at 12th fret.
2. should be factory recommended height. I keep an allen wrench of that size as a feeler gauge.
3. raise or lower as desired.
4. check intonation.

The factory setups I've seen are really spot on. Usually, it is just the trussrod that needs tweaking. The saddles are much more stable and should be at their factory settings. But the fret buzz you got going on after tightening the trussrod seems to say something else is happening.

We'll get it sorted out. Even if I gotta pay a visit. Twist my arm.

I had a similar situation with my Bongo, and if I recall correctly CS told me to loosen the neck bolts so that I could fully expose the wheel. I didn't even take the strings off. Then it was just a matter of hand tightening the wheel until it was good and snug. Worked fine. No problems and it's been over a year.
