Hey!

Just wondering if there are any future plans for 8-string versions of for instance the JP-model? Or will this only be on the table if John needs an 8-string? I'm only asking because I'd love to be able to play Meshugga's song "Bleed" but don't want to buy another brand. I only want EBMM

This is only a guess.....if JP wants one they might go that direction. JP has a say on what he wants. Not sure if he really needs an 8 string...but...I am not him. As of now...the answer is no. But, I have been wrong before.

Yeah, that's what I think too, that they only create what he needs and if he doesn't need an 8-string then there will be no 8-string.
But it doesn't hurt to ask :)

guitarists who seem to step in that direction are usually (warning: speculation) guitarists who have already made the permanent switch from 6 strings to 7 strings. petrucci uses both, i assume because he finds the comfort of 6 strings too important to give up. because of this reason i don't think we'll ever see an 8 from him.

While it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility, I've seen interviews with JP where he says he prefers a standard tuned 6 string to anything else, including 7s, baritones, you name it. It's just a comfort/familiarity thing. He doesn't play in Meshugga either, so I bet my money against a JP8.

That said, EBMM has demonstrated time and time again that they will build what the artist wants. End of story.

I doubt you will ever see an EB 8 string and even if JP wanted one they would probably make a couple for him just for his own personal use as I just do not see the demand for 8 string guitars. Even the 7 string has dropped big time from the height of its popularity once young bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit and the likes ran there course. No disrespect to the players in those bands but very few guys can play a 7 string like a JP, Vai or Cooley as those bands just seemed to mainly use the bass strings. Like TNT stated- when will it end

Maybe I'm out of the loop with the youngsters but , Is there really 8 string guitars? Does any company make them? Why don't people play a bass through a distorted amp instead?

ibanez made them mass produced. but apart from that theyre mostly custom orders.

playing bass through a distorted amp means you dont have the high strings. "why dont they jsut use a bass player and a guitar player?" - because if one hot shot can do both then he gets paid instead of two people.
also you cant play chords with 8 notes with a bass.

a player can surely choose whatever instrument he prefers. if he wants to play a 20 string guitar and he feels that the width doesnt inhibit his technique, can anyone really say anything against him? no. guitar snobbery is such a pain.

Schecter Guitar Research makes them and they now ship from the factory with EB strings! You can also order the strings through any EB dealer. EB 8-String set pn 2625

8's are a lot of fun. I wouldn't count it out. I can see EBMM doing it down the road. For instance Born of Osiris are getting pretty big right now. They play JP7's tuned to G. I can see them making the step to 8's and EBMM maybe accommodating them. One of the Born of Osiris guys already got the only JPXI 7.
