Just wondering if any of you owns a Stingray 4 HS, looking for changing impressions and thoughts on this bass.
I have been experimenting a buzz noise problem with the neck pickup and wanted to know if anybody is experiencing this same problem.

:)

I know it's not a SR, but I have a Sterling HS with no noise. I saw a thread somewhere in which someone was griping about a Sterling HS with noise on the neck pickup so I'm sure it's possible, although rare.

i think i may have read one other thread in some other forum about that.

your best bet would be to contact you dealer, distributor (strings n things) or MM supprt (in that order). they should help you diagnose whether or not something's up and help u take care of it if in fact something's not kosher.

good luck, hope u get it sorted out

hey buddy, i have an hs sterling. i just went and plugged it in to double check and i dont have any noise at all.

i beleive the sterling and sr HS bass' single coil pickups are pretty different. i beleive the sterling is a hum canceller but the SR has a dummy coil... so they're not gonna "behave" the same since theyre electrically different (i think).

single coild do make noise sometimes. they can pick up stuff like fleurecent lights etc and make noise only around lights and other random things.

have you tried pluging the amp into a different part of the house etc?

also... I have a modded bass with an aftermarket preamp in it which is my only basss that is noisey. my dad's an electronics guy and he checked it out and said the preamp and bass are fine (i thought it was a ground issue). he looked into things and said that my cottage's power seems to be bad. he gave some complicated about why this bass has noise and the otehrs did not. i honestly didnt understand what eh said but he was pretty confident and i trust him.

besides getting a hold of the support "chain" (or a tech if that's easier and the potential cost is cool w/ u) id highly recommend trying to move the amp to another part of the house.

good luck dude

Thanks for your help!

I have to say that I have plug the bass in different amps and you always get the same noise. As I told you on the PM I sent you the bass has been tested at Strings & Things and it happen to them too and they also think that something is not right with the bass.
The noise you get is not normal and makes the bass useless for playing and let's not talk about recording... I have tried recording and it's incredibly noise too!

The things is that if you do not touch the neck pickup is not too noisy but as soos as you rest your finger on the pup it get's incredibly noisy... but, if at the same time you are touching the pickup you touch any metalic part on the bass (bridge, jack plug, tuner machines) the noise disappears completly... weird!

Anyway just waiting for them to come with a solution for the problem but this is not at all what I was expecting on a bass of this price and with this reputation.

Just want to find people that has any of this basses, HS pickups, and see if they are experiencing any problems.

Please HS owners, contact me and let me know about your basses!!!

Thanks everyone.

Hey PauBass,

I don't have an HS, but I do have two 2 band 4 string Stingrays that had noise problems. I ended up shielding behind the pickups with copper shielding tape that I purchased from stewmac.com. I am sure your local repair shop would have this too. 3M makes it in different sizes, just make sure to get the type with conductive adhesive. This reduced my noise, but did not eliminate it. I understand that the two bands have noise issues, but mine is now a tolerable level.

Hope this helps.

Yep get CS to deal with it.......

The only problem I have experience is when slapping I sometimes bash the neck pickup and it makes a knocking sound - so I just move my hand forwards.

String and Things should help out......good chaps there.

I have already contacted Customer Service and also I have been to Strings an Things...they checked the bass there and think that something is definetly wrong.
They contacted international CS, asked them about the problem and were given a series of tips to try out but none of them made any difference and it still makes the noise so I was given the bass back until they are told exactly what to do.

CS suggested that maybe this noise is normal due to having the single coil at the neck but let me tell you, the noise is as loud when palying at rehearsal volumes that makes any combination involving the neck pickup useless so you end up just being able to use the bridge one.
Also have tried recording and the result is a really noise mix again completly uinusable and not up to Musicman's reputation at all.

The reason I'm trying to find people with HS basses is to compare and see if they got similar problems to mine and see if we can work out if it's a general problem with this pickup configuration or just a problem with my bass.

:)

HI PauBass.
I have a HS, Piezo Bongo 5 .. When I use the neck pickup only at extreme volume levels I get some noise. (hum) At normal levels though it is not there..
I would think it could be the preamp, pickup or a ground problem.. and would persue those routes. Better still get it back to EBMM

Good luck.

Pau, Am not really going to chime in much after what Beth has said. The matter is in good hands and with the best people.
I used the HS SR4 last night, all five setting, bass and mids boosted, as gig volume (ie concrete cracking) and no problems....apart from my singer is not partially deaf and has no worries about his gall stones....:D
