Anybody changed the pickups in their JP?

I love my JP6, of course. But I find the bridge pickups a tad dark and muddy.
Especially compared to my Singlecut Trem (Which has a Custom 5 in the brodge position).

Now don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the pickups completely. Like I said, I find them dark. I could re-EQ the amp, but the setting is just so sweet for my SCT.
And the Neck pickup is staying. It sounds great for the usage I make of a neck pickup.

So I'm thinking about trying a different bridge pickup. Any ideas? Can I direct mount just about anything on there?

Thanks!

I've been wondering what a Duncan Distortion or a Duncan Invader would sound like in the bridge position of a JP6.... maybe I can live vicariously through you? ;) I certainly won't be swapping parts on my JP6 anytime soon!

I agree that the pickups are a little different than what I am accustomed to... but they are starting to grow on me.

I have another Custom5 coming. I'll probably try it out. See what happens!
I'll make sure I report any findings for your benefit.

YOU PEOPLE ARE CRAZY!!!! CRAZY I TELL YEE. :D But seriously i find the pups in the JP to sound great, wouldn't change 'em, love 'em.

Maybe try a tone zone in the bridge, l have 2 in another guitar of mine, and it sounds great.

I just love the C5 in my PRS SC Trem. Nice, bright and meaty. I bet it'll be great in the JP as well!

I love the bridge Pickup, but I'm having a hard time getting used to the neck humbucker after 20 years of playing HSS guitars. I like the single coil in the neck SRV sound, so I have to hnag on to my old F*nd*r for now.

I have been able to get a Santana-ish sound out of the neck humbucker, and I do love the split middle position, so I won't be changing them out any time soon.

I personally love Petrucci's sound on the last three Dream Theater albums, which I can easily replicate with my JP and my Mesa. Now playing it exactly . . . that's another issue ;)

Dennis,

I love the split position on the JP6, too. It's awesome with a clean chorus sound (a la Roland JC-120). I like the bridge pickup well enough. I am still trying to find the best utilization for the neck pickup alone. It works well for high-gain leads in the higher frets, but I don't like it for lower tones in such a situation. I end up flicking the switch back to the bridge when I get low on the neck just to get some definition to the tone.

There is NO question about John's tone. It rocks!
But in his case, his amp is setup specifically for the JPs since that's all he plays.

My only "problem" with the JPs pickups is how they compare to the other guitars I play through the same amps/rig.

If all I played was JPs though a Road King or four :), I'd have no issues with the tone.

I use my Pet 7 full time now so I can relate to John's rig. I use it in several different amps but the only time I pick up another guitar it's because I broke a string live and have to finish the set.

I recently had a very wierd experience with that too. I was playing a cover gig at the local watering hole a couple of weeks ago. I was rocking out on the Pet 7 when I broke a string for the first time (I got the guitar last fall). So I reach over and exchange over to my backup (an older Ibanez RG 570 I keep on stage for emergencies) and start the next song. About that time I realized that I hadn't played any guitar with less than seven strings in months. I mean even my acoustic has seven strings (I just prefer them all that way). So I go to play the 570 and the thing feels like this tiny little plastic toy. I barely made it through the set and quickly changed the string on the Pet on the next break.

Anyway, back on topic, I like both the pickups in my Pet as a set. Individually, I've had both bridge and neck pickups that I've like better but never a set that sounded right together. That being said, I've thought about swapping either or both but I would have to switch back if I couldn't find a pair that "matched" up as well. :D

Interesting observation on the 6 vs. 7 string guitars.

I ordered my first 7 string - from a small, custom builder, Jim Soloway. Should get it in May or so. But I don't think I'll be playing it exclusively, so hopefully, I won't have a problem with switching guitars.

I used to play both sixes and sevens equally and never had a problem switching back and forth but after months on only sevens the six was wierd. :)

I went through this phase where I played only a 12-string in a "new age" fingerstyle/keyboard thing, then I decided to play metal again, so I can kinda relate to the shock of coming back to a regular six, the feel is weird at first.

It's strange you say that, l've heard quite a few people say that if they play a 7 string for a long time, then they go back to a 6 string, it fells like a toy. I was gonna buy a Pet 7, but l wouldn't have any use for it.
