Anybody Play in a Tribute Band?

I almost played in a Journey tribute band. The thing is that my vocal range is pretty high; Steve Perry high. That means the band would be kind of messed up. I should be doing Neal Schon's parts. His vocal range is mid tenor. Toto would be the same way. I would have to play Luke's part. My range is more like Bobby Kimball or Joe Williams.

Kansas? Man I would love to do that. But, what I envision is less of an "Atomic Punks" thing where the members look and sound just like classic VH and more like a band that does the tunes very very close to the originals. For example, maybe I do a Kansas tribute but there's only one guitarist and the keyboardist doesn't sing lead vocals.

Kind of like if it were a Yes-type lineup; but with a violin player. Get what I mean? We could do the tunes but not have a member format exactly like the "real" band.

Butch, the Atomic Punks are GREAT!!! They are the ultimate tribute band! their drummer is also in a rush tribute band...i forget the name of 'em.

Lucky me - my band gets to open for the Atomic Punks this weekend in AZ! Last time they played this place there was a 1000+ people there. I'm not nervous, though - something about being in a band playing someone else's music makes it not so scary.

I sub in for a Neil Diamond tribute act from time to time... it's a cool set, loads of laughs with the typical Casino lounge crowd that come out to see them

and I might be doing some work soon with a funk/r&b cover band in the new year, now that band cooks, not a tribute band per se but a smoking set! and great guys in the band.

Is that band "Nearly Neil"

I play in some kind of tribute band ...
I said "some kind" - 'cause we play at the same time our own music and Frank Zappa stuff ...

in 2006 we are at "Zappanale # 17" festival in Germany, playing strictly Zappa ... now we prepare our first studio album - including only our songs ...

so we ARE Zappa tribute band, and we're NOT tribute band ONLY
and this band name is - PiKANTiK ...

What l find with Tribute bands is, say it's a Bon Jovi tribute band, 2 band members will take it too far (e.g. Richie Sambora and Jon Bon Jovi) then the other cats in that band are just dressed like they are going to do their laundry, l'm not really a fan of tribute bands anyway, l like to hear a wide range of songs from a cover band.

We're slowing down lately because the guitarist wants to do an original project. We're recruiting another guitarist and switching to a Godsmack tribute.

A friend of mine plays guitar in a pretty well-known KISS tribute band. They sound like the real deal and I love watching him do it. As for me, I wouldn't play in a tribute band because it's so opposite of why I enjoy playing guitar. I enjoy playing because it's pretty much the only thing in my life that is creative. When I take the creative aspect out of it (i.e. teaching guitar), it becomes a just a job to me. By the same token, I never played in cover bands either. Not to say I have never played covers before. I have, but mostly it was for the amusement of the band and never a 'hit'.

I have to be doing MY thing, even if I know way less people are going to like it . But man, I would never knock someone else for doing it. For some people, just playing is enough. I have to be writing to feel engaged musically.
