From what I've read, the JSX was not built from the ground up, but based on other existing Peavey amps (XXX was the basis for the "ultra" channel, I think). Satch is one of my top 5 favorite guitarists, but I've actually never been a big fan of his guitar sound. His playing makes up for that, though
I've had a 5150 half-stack for 15 years & have played a couple hundred gigs with no problems. I have the 2x12 combo as well which I've actually grown to prefer. For high-gain amps, I still think they're great. Having said that, they're not very versatile & don't have a (usable) clean channel.
I'm looking into the Mesa 2x12 Roadster & the Stiletto Ace. They both seem very versatile.
ill have to second larry andrews comments! im a bass player but that lil tiny terror is one hell of an amp!
ive sold loads of it to the musicians in town.. they love it for its light weight, the power it packs even if its just 15 watts and the fabulous sound it has!! dont gain it too much, then turn it up till you get that sweet power tube distortion.. oh la la!!! just let the picking hand control the amount.. hit hard and it growls.. hit soft and it nibbles
also i find it to be very quiet.. not that waterfall roaring in the background when you dont play!
get a good booster/overdrive pedal for your solos and you should be in gittar heaven
From what I have read they aren't made in China yet. Mine was made in Korea. And I convinced a friend to get one and his was also made in Korea. The China manufacturing seems to be a e-rumor.
Furthermore I have yet to read a review or complaint bashing quality. Its as solid as any amp I have played Marshall Mesa ect.
HOWEVER, I just got a LONESTAR combo (classic) a week ago on GC blowout ($975). AMAZING amp. Not mark IV brutal (without a pedal). but all else is BUENO!!
I can get a JSX in the $725 range, so it is much cheaper then mesa. excellent amp covering alot of territory. Peaveys seem to hold up well on the road.
** I did see a boss heavy metal pedal in JPs arsenal. Hmmmmmm.......
I've played my JP7 and Luke 1 thru my Peavey JSX combo. Sounds fantastic...has a different character than the Mesa Mark amps. Hell of a deal too...I paid $600 for a mint JSX combo.
My advice would be to avoid the JSX combo...stick with the heads. It sounds better thru a different cabinet (in my case a couple Bogner Cubes). The combo seems to get really hot. Mod shops wont touch the combo version.
