Some people have reported a buzz when they have their piezo equipped guitar connected to a high gain setting amp for the mags and a pa for the piezo. Usually a DI box with a ground lift will help this problem. Can anyone here report as to whether or not the EB splitter box can help with this problem?

NorM,

I use an EB Splitter, and then run the piezo output from that into a DI box with ground lift then into the PA. I need to utilize the ground lift to avoid hum most of the time because the PA is generally plugged into a different circuit than my guitar rig and the difference in potential ground makes lots of hum. The switch on the DI generally takes it out completely. One place where I played, the lift cut the hum significantly but the wiring in the place was so bad, I still had a little (probably radio stations).

Oh, and to answer the question, I don't think the splitter will do anything to remove hum in and of itself.

I use the magnetic/piezo combination on my Silhouette Special quite often and I experience the hum you are referring to. Oddly enough, it does not happen when using my POD XTlive/Power Engine setup but rather when I use a tube amp. The splitter box will not help with the ground loop issue.

A direct box with a ground lift should work but one caveat is that I have found that the Whirlwind IMP2 DI does not solve the problem but the Whirlwind Director does take care of the ground loop. Go figure.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys,
That's pretty much what I thought. I run both the amp for the mags and the PA from the same power conditioner but I still get the hum. Radio interference...? OK. Yes the DI box does cure what ails me. So then the only reason for me to get the splitter would be to have a cleaner look coming from the guitar with just one stereo cable. I just checked and George L doesn't have a stereo cable on their website. I kinda like the dual cable look anyway.

Still, that splitter box does look sexy and thanks for bringing the sale to our attention.

While checking for a low capacitance cable from EB I found this picture

Did anybody order one of these splitters from the e bay seller?
It was item number 130185330077

This was my first purchase on e bay.
The seller says he posted on Jan 17th - hasn't turned up yet. I've mailed him tonight to ask him.

- maybe he sent it surface post???

Mine never showed up either. My money was refunded to my PayPal account but no email or excuse from the seller.

Spud,

I ordered 2 from them, and was refunded money a few days after they were supposedly shipped - turns out that although they said they would post to UK, due to an EBMM policy of not shipping this item to Europe due to CE standards not being met, they in fact couldn't send to the UK hence the refund and none delivery. They have since terminated dealing with EBMM and no longer stock their products.

The cheek of it all is that they then tried to recoup the auction costs from the buyer - if you get an ebay dispute mail - do NOT say you'll pay costs - they claimed they had the part and would ship it to the UK in their auction. There's no reason why you should pay for their administrative error!

Hope this helps clear it up for you...

I ended up paying Maplins just under a tenner for the parts and building my own based on a diagram submitted in an posting somewhere. Not tested it yet but it should work as it turns out I'm not that bad with a soldering iron!

Thanks for the replies Dreamrycher and AppleM.
You prolly built it based on my very diagram in the thread
http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-guitars/27209-alberts-w-piezos-3.html ;)

The EB splitter was a pressie from my son - now I guess I'll have to go through the hassle of getting the money refunded to him.
I don't think I'll be using e bay again after this experience !!

Edit
The cheek of it is that he has quoted a USPS tracking number saying that the package was posted on the 17th Jan. I dunno - me E bay virgin - me confused !!

Hi Spud,

This isn't an ebay thing - it's an issue with an ebay member / seller. Ebay can be good - however, I understand your decision to avoid it if your only experience is a bad one! Sorry to hear it has a knock on affect to your son - bet he's gutted Dad didn't get his cool EBMM parts.(

And yes - you are correct - I built my 'splitter' based on that very diagram - kudos to you for that! ;o)

P.S. Can't believe you got as far as a UPS tracking number! I sent a mail after a fortnight politely enquiring if there was a possible E.T.A on my item after it all being quiet for a bit to long - I got a response saying it had been sent and returned opened and resealed, and they were sending me another parcel - this was before things started going pear shaped...

Oh well. Won't be using them again!

beej explained it pretty well in another thread that you'll still get the hum even if you run everything through the same power conditioner. You still have multiple paths to ground.
