I'm thinking of selling my ESP Eclipse II (dual 81's), which is tuned Drop C.

It's a Hell of a guitar, but it's becoming harder and harder to pick up after playing my Balls - completely different ergonomics.

So, I was thinking of using my BBB BFR JP for Drop C instead.

I've got 11-52's on the ESP at the moment.

So my main questions are :

* Who's done it ?
* What gauge did you use ?
* How'd the nut handle the big gauges - any/much filing ?
* How'd the final setup go ?

and for those who did it with a D-Sonic BFR :

* How'd it sound ?

Thanks :)

I currently have my DDII in Drop C. I never changed the strings, so, they are the factory ones.

I tuned her in, adjusted the trem claw, truss rod tweak and put it on a robotuner. The intonation was slightly off...set that, re-tuned and let her sit for 2 hours. Checked tuning again, slight tweak, checked intonation (spot on) and let it rip.

Still currently set up that way and I barely have to tune it. It is so slightly off after band practice that I am still amazed at how great these instruments are to this day.

I was never one to go with a larger gauge string as I don't like anything past the 10's. Works for me. :cool:

Dizzy, I know this is not the exact answer you are looking for (go figure a lefty is not giving a great answer:p) But it is a great solution. You should check out the Morpheus Drop tune pedal. I use it in my band and works really well. The great thing is that can keep your guitar tuned to standard and not have floppy strings. Check it out.

Travis from Threat Signal uses a JP Stealth in Drop C. He hangs around the JP forum (handle is Kirktrucci, or something like that). But you could see how he sets it up.

I seem to remember Bulb tuning his JP to drop C, allthough I think he has the tremol-no installed in his.

Here are the specs from JPs site.

Code:
Guitar

1st  	2nd  	3rd  	4th  	5th  	6th  	7th
Bari Bb
.12 	.16 	.22p 	.34 	.46 	.62
Bb F Db Ab Eb Bb

Bari A
.12 	.16 	.22p 	.36 	.48 	.64
 A 	E 	C 	G 	D 	A

Seven
.10 	.13 	.17 	.26 	.36 	.46 	.56
   E 	B 	G 	D 	A 	E 	B

Main
.10 	.13 	.17 	.26 	.36 	.46
E 	B 	G 	D 	A 	E

Drop D
.10 	.13 	.17 	.26 	.36 	.52
 E 	B 	G 	D 	A 	D

Eb
.11 	.14 	.18 	.28 	.38 	.48
  Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Eb

D
.11 	.15 	.18 	.28 	.42 	.52
  D 	A 	F 	C 	G 	D

C
.12 	.16 	.20p 	.32 	.46 	.54
 C 	G 	D# 	A# 	F 	C

If you combine the strings tuned in D with the .54 from the low C you get

Code:
D 	.11 	.15 	.18 	.28 	.42 	.54
	 D 	A 	F 	C 	G 	C

I haven't done this on a JP yet, but I have my 20th Silo tuned in Drop C. There was a small amount of massaging needed at the nut, a good bit of truss rod adjustment required, and setting the intonation is a must. If you are comfortable switching gauges from 9s to 10s then you will be fine setting up the guitar for DropC - you just need patience!

I like the power slinky set but the beefy slinkys are ideal. I did break the nut off my Sub when I went up in gauge but that was because I didn't file it for the bigger strings and I was doing alot of up picking on that low one. Lesson learned.
