i use an EB almost every gig because of the music i play in my band. if i go jamming something else comes out. i have 5 basses and 4 of them are other brands. i love my EB but i love my other basses too.none of my basses sound better than the other, just different. no fun only having one name brand. my next bass will be custom made.
I own basses from 5 different manufacturers, currently basses from the other 4 manufacturers (other than EBMM) mostly stay in their cases these days, except for one in particular that I take out and play once in awhile... but in any case I wouldn't sell any of my basses regardless of the reason.
But as for electrics, yes I have all MM guitars/basses. I bought my first MM Guitar, the Silhouette Special in 2006. I fell in love with it and sold my Strat- I knew I was never going to play it again. Then I sold my Rickenbacker bass to get a Stingray. Then I traded a guy on Craigslist my Ibanez for a SUB1. I have since bought two more MM Guitars and swapped a Stingray for a Sterling.
I can't say I would never get another brand, but I sure don't miss the ones I had..... well I guess selling the Ric was a bad move. Not that I loved the instrument, but I probably should have given it to my brother, it was his originally.
Although I'm shopping for a MusicMan bass to replace a Stingray I sold several years ago, right now I have basses only made by another builder. I don't find I'm really lacking anything in my tonal palette because of that and the uniformity in specs of each bass is nice. If I were more into EBMM I could definitely see amassing an EBMM armada and not being sad about that, either. One cool result of this if you work for many clients is you develop a more memorable sound.
I went on quite a journey before settling on EBMM. Not naming names, but there were three brands before I got my Sterling 4H. Now I have 3 EBMM and have kept with this brand longer than any other. The only thing I am currently pining for is yet another EBMM (Big Al).
I was 100% EBMM for a few years and still am very passionate about the instrument and the Company behind them... I've expanded my stable a bit lately though my Bongo is by far still my Number 1.
My current Number 2 bass (Brand X) has been heavily "Bongo influenced" and modified accordingly.
And the Gene Simmons Axe bass is really just a wall ornament - really....
After spending several years and owning multiple basses, plus putting various mods on them, I finally got my SR4. The other basses simply fell off, because they didn't fit my sound, play style, or durability requirements.
I currently have the SR4 and my Bongo, and have no desire to get any other basses besides more EBMM. Nothing fits me the way they do... its just that simple.
I got into MM's trying to find a bass that was easier on my messed up hands:
arthritis and carpel tunnel operations in both hands. I was playing 35" scale 5 bangers thinking that scale was better for the B string. I have now had 8 MM's
with two 25th's as my current and keeper MM's. I've found after having SR5's and Bongo's and now the 25th's that I've not only found the bass that works for me playing wise, but every bass tone I want or need is available in the whole line. So yeah count me in with MM's 100%.
I have one non MN bass. I've only used it live once sine I got my Ray, only because itvwas an outdoor gig and 98 degrees, and I didn't want to risk my SR in the heat. It seems like a lot of pros are asscioated wit one bass, like jamerson the precision, jaco and geddy the jazz etc, and for me that bass is a musicman. It gets the tone I hear in my head.
I've played or owned fender, ibanez, gibson, cort, warwick, bc rich basses .. but when i got a stingray 4 w/ my trace elliot rig ... that was it! I'm now getting rid of my ibanez and bc rich and will be 100% EBMM
When it comes to 5 strings, only EBMM. Currently rocking a Bongo5HH and a Stingray 5H.
Really want a Big Al 5SSS or Reflex 5 HSS. I just love the EBMM 5 string neck compared to most jazz style 5 string basses.
Am gassing for a 5 string custom though.
My only other bass at the moment is a DIY 4 string jazz based off a S******y. Easily half the price and just as good as one of those from NYC.
I've owned F****r and W*****k in the past also, and normally sell and buy just for something different.
I had a SR5H for around 8 months from Aug last year that I sold and regretted as soon as it happened, so happy now to have 2 5 string MMs in the arsenal.
