Hey guys. I've been playing hot potato with Axis necks. My cousin got a new trans blue axis and the neck is simply amazing. I ordered a red super sport in the hopes of getting a similar neck, but the one I got was a bit chunkier. I sold that one and bought a used purple axis and that neck is also fatter. I'm probably going to sell this one and try again. But before I do, has anyone ever tried shaving down their music man necks? I figure the difference between his axis and my axis is very slight. Is this a better alternative to the constant neck hunting or should I just sell this one and move on?

thanks,
-Richie

I've had the neck on my Morse shaved down, but by an expert (Tommy here on the board), and it was one of the older lacquered ones. I wouldn't recommend it unless somebody knows what they're doing.

Necks are hand sanded, so what you're feeling is probably a very small difference between the two. I would encourage you not to mess with it and I'd wager you'll get used to it pretty quickly. You could, of course, sand it down a bit more, but you could really be asking for trouble.

Yeah that's what I figured. I wouldn't be doing it myself either, but it sounds like it's not worth the trouble.

Don't do it unless you (or the one you're considering) have sunstantial skill in that area! Just get another neck and keep that one as an extra.

Richiesos you are like me, it is all about getting the perfect neck and chunkie isn't it. I have a Sterling by MM Silo30 which has that awesome thin neck profile. I want to make the move to a Music Man but am cautious not to choose one until I can hold it in my hands and know that the particular model or year has the same sweet neck. Before finding my Silo30, I even went and got an estimate on thinning the neck of my strat. $400 was the quote so I didn't do it and I am glad I didn't. I will eventually sell it. Best of luck to you!

Lisa if you like your Silo30 neck I'm sure you will love the Silo Spec neck and Reflex/GameChanger neck

Lisa - the AL neck is sublime and is perfect for my small hands.

There is a difference between my LE AL and my other 2 ALs - but the difference is negligible and has already been said is probably just a small difference due to the hand sanding part of the manufacturing process.

Am I getting you confused with another Knucklehead (sorry confusion does come with old age!)- but didn'y you one own an Albert Lee ?

The original poster should just try a Reflex imo. It has a c shape which is imo is more comfortable than the Axis neck.

Thanks threeminutesboy and spud. I really do appreciate that input. I look forward to a MM someday.

Spud I have never owned an Al. If I had I would still own it. Would love to get my hands around one of those necks. I am in love with the Al body shape.

The Albert neck is definitely chunkier than the Axis... not by a huge amount though. Sometimes though a chunkier neck is easier to play than a smaller neck depending on the profile so you just have to find one that works for you. I used to like small, thin necks, now I'm going to the other end of the spectrum...

Smallest is the Luke's, chunkiest is the Albert's, the flattest and widest is the JP's....

There definitely are minor differences in each neck due to sanding by hand. I certainly noticed a difference between my 20th Silo and my old Silhouette. I find the Silo Special and Steve Morse Y2D necks really comofortable and I alos like the AL. The AL is a bit rounder I would say, but comfortable. The LUKE I like as well, but I can see how some people would not get along with it. I like all the neck shapes other than the JP...thin necks just make my hands cramp up due to my skinny long fingers.

Hey Lisa. The best thing to do is to go to a store and try one. If you love it, buy it!

I played the reflex and liked it, but for me my original EVH and my axis can't be beat. I compare every neck I play to the necks on these 2 guitars.

The last 2 axis guitars I bought were really nice but the necks weren't like my original 2. It's a matter of taste. I showed my newest axis to one of my co-workers and he said that he liked it better than my other necks, so it really comes down to personal preference.

I tried out a Steve Morse at the music store on monday and that was pretty awesome. I found the fretboard to be a bit flatter, but it was pretty darn comfortable. WANT!

To the contrary the Luke neck is super slim & comfortable (a soft V shape). I just don't get that sort of comfort from any other guitar. I have quite big hands, but for some reason I always preferred skinny necked guitars, just from a comfort point of view.

i never thought of a Luke neck as super slim , i found that my Y2D neck is slimmer then my Luke.

Really Gio? All the Lukes I've played had very slim necks, the Morse/Y2D's always had more meat to them....
