I just want to say thanks for all of the feedback.

I've been trying to find other amps to play to get an opinion of them. I too like the clean channel of the Hot Rod Deluxe, but I find the drive channel lacking.

I have been wanting to try out a THD Univalve, a Dr. MAZ 18 Jr., and a Cornford Harlequinn (sp?). Trouble is, they are a little hard to come by near me. I'll keep my eyes open. You all have given me some suggestions for new things to look out for as well.

sorry for the late reply, the fender Hotrod deluxe is my amp and I am very pleased with it.

The clean sound is just fantastic !! When I bought it I had to choice between the Fender and the Laney 30 (Peavey and Marshall were alredy rejected :p ). Didn't took me too long to decide :D

The Lead and Crunch Canal are also suitable to my style but I added now a Mesa V-TWIN pedal for more diversity

hope this helps

Hey
mine 2 cents worth too....

Got a hot rod deluxe, amazing, even better with a TS-9, but the full on face melting distortion needs to come from a Marshall. - I've got a JCM2000 TSL601, and both amps have marshall 4x12's hanging off them....... the fender is good but you WILL need a little more !

I have a Fender Deville 4x10, and it suits me just fine!! The clean channel is very good, the overdrive is OK, but not VERY good.

I use my Fulldrive2 most of the time to get some overdriven sounds, and it's just perfect.

The Deville is built like a tank but it's very heavy!!! And it's loud!! I usually play with the volume knob at 2, maybe 3. If I could buy it again, I think I would go for the smaller Deluxe 40W.

I'm currently looking to buy a smaller amp (maybe 15W or 18W)... I'm checking out Dr.Z, Matchless, Bad Cat... But these are very hard to find around these areas, but I'll keep searching!!!

Wow so many of you guys have the Deville 4x10, thats great!!! I think it compliments the Ernie Ball guitars splendidly, but you need a good overdrive pedal to go with the cleam channel for sure. I usually use a Rat and a Ibanez Tube Screamer ( original arent I?) but i tried a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive yesterday that worked even better!!!!

Hi,

I've been looking at getting a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (all Tube 1x12 40W) amp. I've read some online reviews and whatnot. I was wondering if anyone from the forum has this amp (or one of the bigger 2x12 or 4x10 versions) and could give their opinions about the amp with and without pedals.

Thanks.
Hi wolfbone07,
What kind of tones are you looking for that lead you to the HRD? My singer used one for a while in my band, but he was always struggling with the overdrive channel. Since my band is modern/alternative rock, we need heavier guitar sounds a lot of the time. He has since upgraded to a Mesa Mark IV and he's happier with both his clean and overdrive sounds than he's even been. Of course, the Mark IV is in a different tier than the HRD, but as I said it was worth it to him because he loved the tones and versatility so much. IMHO, there are some better values out there for the same money, and with a little bit extra, you can get a really kickin' amp. Personally, I use a Mesa F-100 rig which I absolutely love.

In line with most of the others----the clean channel is awesome--the dirt channel,in a word, BLOWS. The only semi-use I get out of is to use the non-boosted drive channel at about 4-4.5 gain to get a SEMI-passable Vox AC type of breakup---operative word here is semi--and the only reason I think I get that kind of a sound is that I also run a 1x12 extension cab with a Celestion Vintage 30 in it. Totally improved the amp all around!!! Its my favorite clean amp though----lookin 4 a Maz 18 for the dirty side.
