I know, blasphemy! But I've always love the mids of my custom custom pickup, and I like the mids of the steve morse models too. Anyone here have any reactions or thoughts about putting a jb or something in a petrucci?
Thanks!

I've been considering the same swap... But I read somewhere here that there could be problems with the size and shape of the mounting bracket??

I swapped a reg JP (with the all rosewood neck) with the new SH-15 (JB on steroids) from Seymour Duncan and it screams!! As for the install it dropped right in. I too didn't care too much for the d-sonic.

I've had SB in the old petrucci model and I had quite respectful results in the low mid and bass range. I am just a big DiMarzio fan so ... keep me in mind if you want to get rid of the original pickups. Thanks!

Ahh, I see you are now selling the BFR.

If you are ready for some tweaking, get hold of a Sub (poplar wood), and tweak it to your prefs. It's a full-on SLO built EBMM. Make it your own signature guitar. Throw some DiMarzio goodness at it and it will surprise you.

Great little workhorses

Thanks all! Sticky thanks for the help! I have the morse (and 3 other guitars), and I said to myself that if I need to spend big money and still ask about pickups/mods, and try to make myself more comfortable, I can't keep this axe! Amazing amazing guitar (sonically/quality), just not a match for my hands/feel I think-thanks!

Yeah, wise words. It's just a whole lot easier/less expensive to just find a guitar you bond with rather than constantly tweaking it.

TB or SH?

I am getting ready to install a set of Duncan Distortion pups in my non piezo jp6. Customer service at SD suggested that I install at set of TB (trembucker) pups rather than an SH (traditional humbucker) due to the wider pole spacing on the TB model to compensate for the wider string spacing of the tremolo bridge. I cut out a template of the Distortion TB using the manufacturer's dimensions from the website and it appears that I will have to at least snip the corners of the mounting bracket in order for the TB to fit. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this and if they have any good advice? Thank You,

Anthony

How is that Custom Custom anyway? I may pull the trigger on a guitar that has the pick up. You have it in one of your guitars?

Thanks!

JP will kill you with his God solos....

But tbh idk, the SD are very good but the JP pups(Crunchlab and Liquifire) that came with mine are amazing so I don't have the urge...also I love playing Dream Theater so that gets Petrucci's sound perfectly haha.

I put SD Full Shred's neck and bridge in my JP6 BFR, but then I put those in all my guitars.

pickup cavity width?

Has anyone measured the pickup cavity that's routed into the JP6 with calipers? The SD website lists their TB pups width as 2.780" and I would like to use these if possible to compensate for the wider string spacing from the tremolo bridge. I noticed that the DiMarzio's poles don't match up with the strings increasingly towards the treble strings and I think this accounted for a washout of the higher pitched strings when jamming on 3 string chords. I raised the treble side pole pieces to compensate for this, but I'd rather just do it right if possible from the beginning with new pups. I'd even be down to sand out the treble side of the cavities (and seal it w/ tung oil) to make way for wider pickups as long as I didn't have to do more than a few hundreths of an inch, maybe even up to 1/10". Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to get this right the first time around :)

Hope this isn't a thread hijack and I'm a noob so....

For those who have switched to other Dimarzios in your Petrucci's (i have a mystic green early model) - what is a good Dimarzio for the bassword combo? I'm thinking Tone Zone as I've had good success with those in other basswood guitars, but I'm looking to add more low end overall to the tone of the guitar as it tends to be kinda bright and hot overall IMO. Not that I mind that, but for cover band type stuff I need something more middle of the road and versatile, sorta like a JB on the Dimarzio side. I don't want to have to cilp the feet on a Duncan to install it in the Petrucci.

Again - mine's an earlier model without the Dsonic.

One more note - I have a early 2000's Purple Ernie Ball Axis - I LOVE THE TONE - it even sounds more mean than my 96 Axis, it has more growl and bite - truly some guitars do take a life of their own. Has anyone tried a stock Axis pickup in a Petrucci?

Thanks for the help!
