I'm definitely in the market for a Bongo, and I have this feeling, that before my days are done, I'm going to aquire both a four string and a five string Bongo.

I had the opportunity to play a fine 4-string Bongo HS yesterday--I noticed that the neck single coil is a bit colder and more focused than the neck pup on the HH version (with is thicker and more "wooly").

So here's my question: do you think that the HS configuration would be better for a 5-string? Would the single coil give more focus and definition to the B-string? I'm thinking that though the 4-string Bongo HH rules the world, it might get a little to thick sounding in the lower register of the B-string.

Comments?

Side notes: Lord Bovine claims the H-S is more refined sounding, but I found it plenty thick and aggressive. This particular one was in Rolls Burgandy, which I had never seen before. All the pictures I've ever seen of it make it look really dark, but it's not. It's just a nice deep cherry red with that awesome EBMM sparkle.

I've had the pleasure of having both a H/H/P 5 string Bongo and a SC/H/P 5 string Bongo in the house for the last two months while my SC/H/P fretless 5 string Bongo has gestated, and it's really been great. I've taken them to gigs together and I have to say that I love them both. I tend to use the neck pickups soloed with some piezo dialed in, and the SC has a bit more attack and cuts through more, while the humbucker has a bloominess like a big truck driving down your throat.

I prefer the depth that the humbucker adds in the neck position for fretted, but if my assumptions are correct, I made the correct decision with the SC for the fretless.

Both B strings sound amazing. They sound diffferent, but I couldn't pick which one I liked better.

Honestly I've only played one w/ 2 humbuckers & didn't like the position of the neck pickup in contrast to my popping/slapping style---it kinda got in the way. I'd love to try one w/ a single in the neck position but my Guitar Center is lame-o. :p

I lowered the pups on my H/SC a LOT and it makes a huge difference for slapping. Still the hottest signal I've got going!
