I think there's no definite jazz tone. Whenever I think of jazz sound I think of Scott Henderson, who is one of my favourites, he mostly plays strat style guitars (Suhr specifically).

If you take a look at Sco, McLaughlin, Metheny, Fiuczynski, Holdsworth, Machacek, Sylvain Luc - is there a recipe for a standard jazz sound? I don't think so. To me it's rather a matter of understanding the "classic jazz tone" term as something similar to hollow body with highs cut off all the way down.

To conclude - jazz can be played on any kind of guitar, as long as it complements the players style as a means of expression...

If I was playing jazz, I'd play it on my Silo's neck single coil, because I just love it! :)

i've been thinking about this recently, as i'm about to start rehearsals for a season of "Hot Shoe Shuffle". If you don't know the show, it's entirely big band charts. Huge horns, and the ballads are slow jazz. No solo's for me in this show unfortunately, all just straight chord work.

I've been trying to decide which guitar to use for the show.

I have the Sil Special (with Luke EMG's).. Deluxe Fender Strat (noiseless single coils) and I've also got a 52 reissue Fender Tele.

I'm leaning towards the Strat at this stage (neck pickup of course).. mainly because it hasn't had a look in at a gig since i bought the Sil Spec !!!

I can get a nice jazz tone from my Axis Sport on the neck humbucker and also on my Silo neck single coil with the tone knob tuned down. I think 22 fret guitars have a better jazz sound because the neck pup is futher away from the bridge.
