My Axis needs some fretwork and since the frets aren't huge to begin with, I'm thinking about a (stainless steel) refret. I could live with the vintage size frets but I'm also thinking about going a bit bigger. For those who may have tried it, what did you think?

Haven't yet! My personal preference is "medium high and medium thick" though. I believe (but check!) EBMM wil do the re-fret for you, however I'm not sure on the frets offered. Someone here who knows for sure will post.

My recollection is that they'll only refret with the stock wire. I'm definitely going stainless even if I don't monkey with the size so that's a non-option for me.

Hey JD,

Yeah, I've played mostly on the taller fret size, however, to me it seems the tall ones just put the fingers too far away from the wood!! It feels as though you re playing in a hole sometimes. I like to actually feel just a "tad" of wood if I press hard enough. The Axis frets are cool, even though they are a pinch on the taller side.

I have had all my guitars re-fretted with the exception of one. They all had Stewmac 149 wire installed, which is fatter and wider than the stock Axis wire. It does give a different feel, though sometimes I play my non refretted guitar and think that EBMM got it right!

Me, personally, I like the size of the Axis frets, but stainless steel frets are nice. I have them on one of my other guitars.

This morning I shipped my ASS out to Phil Jacoby. I decided not to go with the full-on medium jumbo. He's going to refret/PLEK it with Jescar .095 x .047 stainless wire. I also asked him to look into adding a compound radius (10-12") to the fretboard.
