I try my best to support my local dealer, well actually one about 100 miles away. He competes with anyone on price and is straight up honest. He has a Guitar Center about two miles away but does really well. Anyone around Charleston SC should check with Mike at Ye Old Music Shop. You will find Mike the owner and his one employee to be customer friendly.
I have to check myself from grabbing up that RW 'Ray listed. It may be a losing battle.
I think that Shopatron is a great tool-Partly due to the fact that MM basses are one make I would buy sight unseen/unplayed with no concerns.
As a matter of fact, I'd almost prefer an instrument straight from factory to me.
I've bought 3 new Stingrays from local dealers, so I get that. One of them was factory ordered, buttercreme, so I have no problem with "sight unseen." This new channel, however, intrigues me. Especially if the manufacturer can capture a few extra points margin. After all, they do fund this somewhat dysfunctional family.
Now, Big Al or Bongo? And this one might be have to be a 5 string.
We have sold a few basses and guitars through Shopatron, and it is pretty convenient for the customer. You can also check with your favorite dealer(s) and order directly through them.
Keep in mind that with Shopatron the instrument will still go to a dealer and then to you, it is not factory-direct.
I won't have a problem buying sight unseen from SLO. I am on my 9th EBMM and each one was all that I expected it to be. That said, I'm a loyal Dubaldo customer.
