AAARgh another thread that is going to go south.

I have played this. The problem is that it really doesnt teach you....they say it does but you are so focused on the game part that there is little retention

I prefer the old fashion 'go out jam with friends' in a cheapo studio. Much more fun, and burns a lot more calories!

Hey, the way I look at it, it's a free society, and anything that brings musical enjoyment is ok with me.

Every guy wants to play the guitar - hands down!! And, for those who are just starting their journey, well, it speaks for itself.

Besides, it ALL points in the same direction - someday a genuine Musicman guitar!!!!

That's right "guitar hero" fans - come and get the real thing, we're waiting for ya!

The market will sort this stuff out on its own. If it's good in the eyes of the consumer it will survive.

Guitar Hero is a huge hit, and IMHO BP is spot on about it being a gateway drug for future Music Man addicts. But "making music" it ain't. The only way to truly learn is to pick up a real instrument and actually use it.

I don't see why real guitarists wouldn't like it. It has the challenge of the "toy" games but with the added dimensions of required correct fretting on the right string. I've already concocted new challenges for myself....even though the game isn't out yet. If it's looking for an open E string, I'm going to the 5th fret on the B string just to make it hard on myself.

For my kids......one is sticking with his lessons and the other wants me to sell his guitar and buy him a new skateboard.....I can see this as a great tool. Toughen their fingers and get some muscle memory. Maybe you don't retain any of the songs, as BP mentioned, but I sure like this better than picking up a toy with a couple buttons and thinking you can play G n' R songs.

My 2 cents worth.....jack

The word GAME should tell you all, it's not the real thing, it's not a substitute for the real thing, yet it sets a standard for a high quality game that has become a huge hit and said above, it brings awareness of great music previously unheard to youngster and it's getting them into it big time.

My son is 15 now and started learning real guitar at 12, (inevitable in my household), way before he was playing the ps2 game, nowadays he is into Wolfmother, Cream AC/DC, when kids his age were into crap stuff like Justin Timberlake, Eminem, 2 cents or whatever they are called ect, and the most amazing thing is that no one in our family has influenced him in his choice of music. I am pleased to say that he is "saved".

What makes Guitar Hero so good? Well, it is just what it is...a game. A game is when you don't want to take life serious and you need a break. It was not meant for guitar elitists to use, play, put down, etc. It is a fun way of getting a few minutes of entertainment with the thrill of "playing" in a band. I love it and I absolutely suck at it. I get to laugh at myself when I play this game and that is what it is for....FUN!

The one whitestrat put a link on is very cool. How could it not be. It is a game, but, you use your actual guitar to play. Either way you look at it...you have your hands on the frretboard which automatically means you are practicing.

I think both products are cool. Thanks for sharing.
