"bongo hype"?????/ it must be all the advertising we do.

Hype is offensive...how about it wasnt for you?
Just out of curiousity (my favorite line), are/were there any Bongo ads out there?

XC -- I'm tempted!

I've got a gorgeous, mint trans orange SR5 with rosewood board...great bass - played, but babied.

but I've really liked the Bongo SC/H's I've played, and been thinking about switching.

Let me take pictures of it tonight, and make up my mind.

Yeah, I saw Gail Ann Dorsey with Bowie (on vid) a couple years back doing 'Fame' with her Bongo...my first-ever Bongo sighting.

Admittedly, my reaction was mixed..."great tone, but WTF were they thinking in the designing room?"

It's good to eat crow every now-and-then! :D

Well. I gotta say I'd pretty much give up a ball for that Bongo 5, but considering that I am out of work at the moment, will have to pass . . . . ****sigh**** - Tim
Somehow I'm missing the connection. But then I also don't know what line of work you were in, or plan to get into :)

Bongo superlatives:

My Bongo is not my only ugly bass, nor is it my only great sounding bass. But it is definitely my UGLIEST and my GREATEST sounding bass.

A question in another thread went unanswered, about EB outsourcing [if any]. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't the Bongo body design outsourced to some pretigimous bunch, like the Porche Design Group? And where can I hear the PDG's latest tunes?

It was BMW. Don't know if "outsourced" was the right term. They worked together on it, I believe.

As far as outsourcing other parts of the basses, I think the only stuff they don't make is the stuff that you can't really "make" easily (tuners, fret wire, electronic bits (but not the entire electronics, because on the tour we saw them soldering preamps & wiring pickups [I'm talking mostly pots, capacitors, little bits of silicone]), fret markers, inlays, pots, knobs, etc.

Patrick,

I was in the same boat as you... got a Bongo, tried to like it, but it just never "clicked."

Good luck getting another 'Ray!

It's underfundage, plain and simple, and regrettably you can't eat a Bongo . . . . . although it looks like the Dude may be going to make a try some time soon . . . . and no, I am not a working musician, so getting a new bass won't make me any money . . . . at least not anytime soon . . . .

It just hit me. I should have titled this thread: "Someone left the toilet seat up."

Prepares for barage of assorted fruits and veggies.

You remember a BMW ad that asked "What if an SUV were raised by a family of sport sedans?". Now we have to ask "What if a bass guitar were raised by a family of overstyled but way ugly SUVs?" Well, [answer] it would "Plumb the deepest depths, leap tall buildings in a single bound, and groan loud and long even with a bag over its head".

Here's an ad for you: "Bongo Love. Play it with the lights out".

In the case of my Stealth Bongo, I prefer MEANER to UGLIER. :D
I think if I ever get a fretless Bongo it should be a Stealth. Some of my other FLs are black on black on black [including the fingerboard and strings]. But I'm glad my current [only] Boingo is bright orange cuz that says "I don't need to hide or disguise this critter, cuz just wait til you hear it sing". Go listen to track 10 on the Cabaret soundtrack [If You Could See Her].

We get it, Broken Record. You think the Bongo is ugly.
