Gig bags are fine when used properly, I have a nice new MM gig bag from DuBaldo Music and it serves its purpose, protects the guitar on short trips to my brothers or to show off to the guys at work and much easier than carrying the case, besides MM gig bags are nice.:)

If I am going out to practice or for a quick appearance during a set I pack with the EB gig bag. If I'm bringing a bunch of gear around I use the hard-shell case.

It would take a lot of use/abuse to the gig bag to cause it to scratch your guitar.

Well I guess that's where I went wrong 'cos I wasn't using an EB gig bag ha!

I don't know what case the guy used on the bass forum to cause dings to his bass?

With regard to the me mentioning scratches I must emphasise that they were only swirl type marks in the top coat - akin to using some t cut.

I think that everyone has it right :)

All gig bags will eventually put micro scratches on the finish of a guitar. The action of taking the guitar out of the case and putting it back in will do that. It's just the nature of a close fitting gig bag vs. a hard case. Many people feel that the convenience of a gig bag outweighs the tiny scratches on their guitar which are minor compared to what happens when they regularly gig with the guitar. If it really bothers them then they just get the guitar buffed once every couple of years.

When I gigged as a baass player my Stingrays always travelled in a gig bag but then I always carried the bass with me and it never went in the back of the van. For my guitars, the EBMM hardshell case is sufficiently light and small that there is no need for a gig bag but I completely understand why many people would use them.

I use a gigbag to take guitars to practice. Mainly because of the distance I have to go. It hurts my hands taking the hardcase. I like being able to put it over my shoulder.

Unless I have to fly or put the guitar in the back of a car or truck with the PA gear, hardcases are a pain in the ass, IMO. A good quality gig bag can do a great job, is lighter, will have more storage space for tools, strings, picks, etc. Besides, if they are good enough for EBMM to use for display guitars then it's good enough for me and I would think good enough for anyone.

Of course the best rule of thumb is never leave your guitar anywhere you would feel uncomfortable yourself. (If that means a hard case over a gig bag then so be it, ya big babies!). :D

If I am getting a lift to practice though and its going in car then it goes in hard case.

My ball and soon to be balls are to precious to me to jeopardize their safety for a mere convenience.

So I hardshell it. :D

This discussion reminds me of my first guitar, a horible Les Paul copy that I worked 3 month cutting grass 8 hours a day to get. Of course, I couldn't afford a hard case so I used to carry it around in the cardboad carton it came in. After being rained on a few times at the bus stop the box started to fall to bits so I took to carrying the thing wrapped in a grey blanket my Dad got when he was in the RAF :)

In case people don't know what an EBMM gig bag looks like and how well padded they are, I have attached some pics below:
