my observation so far has been that wide necks (whether fat or slim) make me dig in and gravitate toward groove-oriented lines.

For me? Neck sizes are overrated as I play with my thumb along the length of the neck (not with my thumb vertical to the neck like Jimi Hendrix). This means even with really small hands, I can play very wide (or thin) necks easliy.

A lot of it has to do with how you play IMO.

wow, really cool and good comments so far. i must admit now that i'm 6'3" and i havef airly long fingers, so size ain't really an issue for me and kinda forgot it could be and issue for some.

I once mentioned I thought my hands were too small to play a particular part correctly and Chuck Rainey observed that Anthony Jackson, author of said part, has hands smaller than mine. He didn't blink or smile when he said it and I realized I'd just been called out by a legend. That was a humbling and defining moment!

I used to play a short scale but I liked the tone of my 34" scale bass better. Then I got an SR5. Playing that gave me confidence to try different necks. I never thought I would like an SR4 neck but it feels comfortable thanks to playing the SR5. GAS time! :)
