I just happened to be looking at my Guitar Center receipt right now and I noticed something that they employees there never told me about and I am a little upset...

Apparently the hard shell case costs extra?

I would think that when buying a $1500+ instrument that a case would be included. Even F3nder includes a gig bag of some type for free when you buy even the cheaper ones.

I am not trying to bash EB. I love my sting ray--don't get me wrong. But honestly I have 3 hard shell cases laying around that I would have used if I had known I was being charged another 85$ for a case.

Was I ripped off?
Shouldn't the employees have notified me of the charge?

EBMM cases are included with the purchase of the bass and are not a separate charge.

True enough if we're talking about when a retailer buys the instrument from Ernie Ball.

I'm pretty sure that retailers can do what they want. If it were me, I'd go back to the retailer and discuss it rather than try to get the internetz to fix it.

Well I just saw it now at 10 at night so I thought I would see if anyone else was charged when buying at guitar center.

There was a discussion about this a long time ago. Apparently, GC has done this in the past. I don't remember what the outcome was - but it's an inventory issue or something like that. But if you don't need the case, hey.

its a nice case dont get me wrong lol. I would just at least rather be given the option when buying it. just seems silly to be charged for it.

In addition to what has been said here: I would have to say "no".

I've purchase numerous guitars throughout the years, with and without cases, and although one would "think" that they are included, I never assume that!

Here's the reason: Sometimes I've reached such a good price point on a guitar that the retailer will say,.. "ok, but case not included."

Most retailers will post a little note that the case is or isn't included, at lest in their "asking" price.

But, regardless of how a retailer purchases from the manufacturer, it is still up to their discrection on what they want to include in their sales, that which also reflects the agreement they may have with the manufacturer on what "must" be included.

Just my experience.:)

GC and Musicians Friend are the same company. Guitar Center "divorces" the case from the instrument when it comes in, they say because alot of people do not want cases. They lower the price of the instrument accordingly, so that the price of the case and the instrument add up the same as they ordinarily would. It is retarded, but that is the way they have done it for years.

You are not getting charged extra. It's just that they break the price down on your receipt.

Say the tag says $1599. The receipt will show 1499 for the bass and 100 for case. The separate sku numbers tell them what's in inventory because sometimes people like to come in and buy just the case or just the bass.

who doesn't want a case with their bass? i got my bass with a case brand new for 1k even back in 05 at somewhere that was not a guitar center but thats me. i can understand if the bass is used and the case never existed but selling a 1000$ or more bass without the case just seems goofy to me. my fernandes suffers the wrath of being a bass that didnt come with a case but its a 250$ bass with probobly no resale value.

Me. I have nice gigbags that I use to take either a single bass or two basses in a double bag to gigs. I don't sling my basses into a van with the rest of the band gear, and I'm the only one who carries my stuff. Unless it's a special case like the 30th Anniversary, or the blue case that came with the Blue Dawn ltd ed, I really have no interest in a case, and the option of getting the instrument cheaper is one that I'll take pretty much every time.

FWIW, the Atlanta GC finally has a couple of 4 string Big ALs in stock, and both of the tag stated "case included in price." Of course, one of the tags had the retail price, and the other had the list price, so it looked like the white pearl with rosewood board was $700 more than the sunburst with maple board, but I digress...

My 77 Stingray was case extra, but I believe that the total price was the same, combo or seperate.
My F*nders all were "case included" under one sku.
My H*mer USA 12-string bass was "case included" from the company, but the dealer gets the bass in under a seperate sku & price for each (which adds up the same), then sells them together under one price.
So GC might be selling the bass at a lower price without the case.
The only way to tell is to know the msrp and to do a comparison with other dealers...with or w/o case.

My 25th I purchased in the GC in Vegas, it was priced including case but the invoice showed the case separately. They may do this for tax reason. I was happy about the fact since I was importing to Germany and the case is levied differently.
