Hi Kats and Kittens,

Been away for while. Thought I would post this YouTube link highlighting what I think is one of the best examples of why the MM Stingray is used exclusively in modern recording today.

Enjoy.

Great mix on this one. I really liked that little melodic lick he threw in around the 4:40 or 4:50 mark. Sounded sweet!

Thanks for the correction about the player, Rano.

About the tone coming from the Ray, I partially agree. That sure is true, but in this specific case, hands and skill are also a major factor. Listen to the slap tone, then to the way the bass sounds when Mark plays some smooth licks further on the neck. Almost as if they were two very different tones, though this is one and only one. It's pretty much in the fingers, IMO. But the growl, the grain, yes they are definitely Ray-typical.

I understand that but even with his hands and skills if he were playing a P bass he would have sounded completly different if you know what i mean

Completely agreed. No matter the tone variations depending on the positions on the neck, the Ray growl is here and well.

BTW, if anyone here ever has some clues of how to get that tone (and its differences controllable only by the fingering), I'm ready to read from that ;)

Cheers everyone,
Jean

Get a StingRay 4 with rosewood fretboard, 3band EQ and just play it at the same position as he does. Done. ;)

Honestly, IMO the key is actually the SR 4... no other bass, even EBMM, gives you that  tone
