..ass pickups nearly as hot as dsonic ?

..i have a -supposedly already answered- question...(did some searching, but havent found the right answers yet)..

..i am having an eye on a ebmm ass..

..are the dimarzios in the ass hot enough to do some shredding..?
..how hot are they compared to lets say a d-sonic ?

not sure about which pickups are hotter, but you mos' definitely can shred with the Axis and same goes for the Super Sport (just my .02, ymmv, etc. etc. etc.)

btw, what sort of rig are you planning on running your guitar thru? that too, should be considered when trying to determine how much of a shred-tastic experience your are trying to achieve

..going through a line6 pod xt live into atomic reactor (which is a full range valve amp designed for line 6 pod gear)..
..so choosing any amp with enough preamp gain is no problem..
..reason i am asking this question is that i am maybe planning to sell my jp7 in trade for an axis..(just am discovering that seven strings are not that much my thing...wider neck..small hands..etc etc etc)..

..trying to rock on..

and, if you gotta do trade .... take your time and make sure you are getting the right gee-tar (speaking from experience ... too many trades, too many impulse buys .... d'oh!)

although I do neither know the D-Sonic pup nor the JP guitars, I also consider the Axis pups to bee very hot. Due to the direct-to-wood mounting, the pickups are pretty far away from the strings. However, I have a hard time getting a really clean sound out of the clean channel of my alltube amplifier (homebrew).
But for higainy tube sounds (Soldano-like or hot rod Marshally) they really kick ass!

..i am now proud owner of an ass *rosewood* and you of course are right..
..the pickups are very very very hot..
..i for myself prefer the neck and the pickups of the ass over the jp7..

mesadualrec, I think, really loved the ASS pickups so much. He ended up trading his JP for it! (It was a rare colour, too, but it was still for the tone, I'm sure)

The Axis bridge p/up which is the same in the Sport and the Super Sport gtrs have an accelerated midrange. Really beefy. Very much the "Eddie VH" tone.

The D Sonic has about the same output but is fairly scooped in the mids. I like both pickups clean but w/some gain they respond differently. Yes, you could shred w/either pickup but the overall tone is very dependent on the type of amp, gain source, eq etc.

I like them both but I think the Axis pickup has better personality than the D Sonic. The Axis pickup responds a bit better with less gain while the D Sonic really likes to be driven.

..imho youre right..."beefy" describes it better..maybe its not the pure output but the midrange that makes them more "hearable" to my ears..

Definitely more of a difference in frequencies than output. Dimarzio and BP both say the Axis pickup is a fairly low output pickup compared to something like a Breed or Evolution. Still, it has all the bite in the world. To me, there is no substitute. I even have an extra bridge pickup in case I buy a guitar without it.
