Audition

I had my audition with the cover band this afternoon. I won't know until tomorrow if I passed or not. I had to play "Smokin'", "Hella Good", "Gimme Three Steps", "Smooth", "Don't Fear the Reaper", "Roll with the Changes", "Beginings" and "Make Me Smile". (Some of the older guys might know these. ) I think it went real well, but the other bassist that I heard was pretty good too. One thing in my favor is that they know I've been working on their set list for a few months and it will probably take me less time to get up to speed. They have three gigs in December so I'll have to work hard between now and then if they pick me.

Thanks to John, I got to try out using my Blue Pearl SR5. It sounded awesome. That alone should get me the gig.

Glad to hear the audition went well and Im also glad the SR 5 found a good home playing some good music. I know that it will be well takin care of which is very important to me even if its not my bass anymore. They're works of art to me that command a certain amount of respect and dicipline to learn and im glad to know that I probably wont see it banged up and covered in duck tape or something.

I can't believe I'm still waiting to hear about this gig. The guy I was up against was playing some kind of coffee table bass through a Peavey rig. That right there should be enough to give me the edge.

Just wanted to add- Sometimes selection is based on any number of things, "image", personality, and who knows what else.

If you KNOW you nailed the music, and you were stoked about your sound, then you got the job done, and that is what matters.

I've been on both sides of the table- I have kicked butt while playing for various projects, but apparently did not fit their profile I guess, and that's OK, I know what I brought.

I've also auditioned innumerable guitarists, drummers, vocals, etc. many of whom were VERY good, but someone else just seemed like a better fit- just like a day job!

Anyway, good luck,hope you have to dodge the ladies who are crawling on stage, but if not this one, then the next!

Well, after 4 days I finally got an e-mail telling me that they were going to go with the other bass player. It kind of bums me out because I put a lot of time into learning the covers that they play. Apparently the vote was tied between the two of us and for reasons unknown to me, they chose him. Que sera, sera.
I still have Far Cry to play with.

just put whatever time you can on your instrument and your next one should go smoother. The new guy may not work out so keep your options open. Don't go burning any bridges. Make it a positive thing. Many, many years ago I did an audition for a band. I was the only one who showed up so I got the part. It was the only audition that I have done. People just called me after that because they liked my aproach.

No really! Same thing with actors, dancers, writers, etc. There may only be one spot available and 150 players want it....

Only the smallest percentage of bassists, the Nathan East's, the Lee Sklars, the Chuck Rainey's, can pick and choose, the rest of us either work as sidemen or start our own projects, so it's a constant thing, until you may get a rep as a "go-to" kind of player.

You certainly gain something by learning and adding new tunes to your "data base" of material, and I've found that it always expands my range of styles by checking out new material.

Sorry you didn't get the call on this gig, but there's always opportunities for solid bassists, so just focus on playing the best you can.
I said before that there are all sorts of reasons why a certain choice is made, but as long as YOU know that you brought it, you got the job done.

Hmmm. I hadn't though of that.

You know that they say the grass always looks greener on the other side. I think I found this time that the grass had turned brown from being over fertilized.
