My SR5 is from ebay and was secondhand and I'm very happy with it.

Now if I wanted to buy a new MM (say a Bongo5) then what sort of price would I be looking at in Australia?

I've never seen a Bongo in a Brisbane store but there is a used SR4 fretless that's been in one store for a year for A$2200. Another has a new SR5 for A$3000.

As far as I know MM won't allow me to buy from the US direct.

Advice on Aussie situation please?

From memory, CMC are the EBMM distributor in Australia. Their contact details are listed on the EB website on the international dealer page. I bought my Bongo in Australia by phoning CMC and asking them which Bongo colour and pickup configurations were currently in the country. At that time, a couple of years ago, there were only 3 Bongos in Australia, so I didn't have many to choose from. Once I chose the Rolls Burgundy HH, CMC hooked me up with my local EBMM dealer (Allans) to complete the sale. I recall paying AUD$2500 or thereabouts.

With an Australian list of AUD$3695 for a Bongo you can buy a used one from one of the forum members or on ebay, shipped to Australia, including 10% GST (there is no import duty payable on electric basses) for less than half that price. I've seen used Bongos for US$850-1000, which would equate to a landed cost in Australia of around AUD$1600-1800.

At the time I was buying, there weren't any used Bongos doing the rounds, so I had no option but to buy new.

Call Guy at www.basscentre.com.au, last time Iwas there they had a couple of bongo's. He's really good, and you can usually get a decent price.

I think they've still got a 5HH Stealth Bongo, and a black 4H bongo.

I take it you've never importing a bass? It's actually a breeze - no more difficult than signing for an article of registered mail, or an oversized parcel that won't fit in your letterbox.

The seller fills out the customs paperwork at their end, and once the item arrives, you go to your local post office and pay the 10% GST (or do it over the phone with a credit card if a courier like Fedex or UPS etc is used). There is no import duty on electric basses, so it's a very simple job.

I hear what you say about supporting Australian business, and I like to do so as much as possible myself, but if you're wealthy enough to pay twice the price just for the sake of it, good on you. Me, I'd rather save $1000 on the cost of a bass, so I can buy another one

Strangley enough, I work at a store in Canberra called Better Music, and we are infact a EB and MM dealer, and I know for a fact that I can do better prices then the Bass Centre on anything you need.

Crikey mate that's a lot of quids. What's a bloke to do, hit bass on the Didjeridoo? My shelia think's I got a few 'roos loose in the top paddock to spend US$1200 on one. But I have fallen A over T for a Bongo and now think they are the bee's knees. Good on you for recognizing its a beaut. With a price like that now wonder your up a gum tree in Oz.
