For a long time CDMA and TDMA were the dominant Cell technologies in the US. The main TDMA providers (Cingular and AT&T, which are now the same company) switched to GSM as the TDMA technology died out. Now the country is about half GSM and half CDMA, but coverage for GSM is basically all over the nation. I use a quadband GSM phone that is useable in basically all GSM using counties.
Tiffs, or Steve if you are with her when she makes the purchase, make sure she avoids the Cingular prepaid SIM cards. Cingulars main frequency is 850mhz which your phone will not have. T-mobile and most of the other prepaids will be more useful.

She's scheduled to land at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport at about 3:00pm local time. Jack & Ray are landing at 12:30 pm and I'll pick them up in the shuttle van then send Ray back to get Tiff later.
