Help! Avatar Upload Problems

I have just joined this fantastic forum site, and I have discovered that uploading an avatar just does not work.

On every occasion on which I attempt to do so, the site returns the following message:

Oops! We ran into some problems. Please try again later. More error details may be in the browser console.

I have tried from three browsers across two devices.

The file is a 600px square PNG.

I have been able to upload another image in my first forum post.

If anyone can advise whether I am doing something wrong, or whether it is a site-specific problem, that would be appreciated.

Thanks Kev. I suspected that it was a site issue, and I expected to find that someone had already raised the issue here; but apparently not.

Hey Xenedis, welcome to the forums!

The avatar upload limit is 2MB. A 600px PNG can easily exceed that depending on how it was exported. You can check your file size and if it's over 2MB, try one of the following:

- Re-save as JPEG (usually much smaller)
- Run it through a free optimizer like TinyPNG
- Reduce the dimensions slightly

I had a glimmer of hope there, but unfortunately that appears not to be the cause of the problem.

The file that I was trying to upload is 147KB in size -- well under 2MB.

I tried another version, which is even smaller (61KB), but the same error occurs.

Here are the two main console messages:

[Error] Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 () (hammer.min.js.map, line 0)
[Error] Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 403 () (avatar, line 0)

Okay, I might have found the problem.

The server does not appear to accept PNG files. When I saved the file as a JPG (and remained under the 2MB limit) it worked.
