Hi,

I just bought a used Natural Axis and it sounds fantastic. Just a quick question about the neck.

Are all Axis necks completely unfinished? It is quite dirty and feels rough. I have played other EBMM guitars which feel a bit satiny when new but this one is bare wood. Is that normal?

How should I get it back to new condition? I am in the Middle East and not sure if I can get some of the oils and waxes I read about in other posts. I thought of using 0000 grade wire wool and finishing with some kind of oil? What do you advise?

Ta,
Jim

Hi Jim and welcome to the forum.

The necks come from the factory with a "raw" finish, insofar as they are sealed with Birchwood casey gun stock oil and birchwood casey wax.

Both these are available on e bay.

Use some 0000 grade wire wool but that can be a bit messy what with slivers of wire getting all over the place.

You could consider using 600 - 800 then 1000 grade automotive wet and dry paper.

Then wipe the Birchwood casey oil on with a paper towel. Don't let it sit for too long, do as the factory does and wipe it straight off. You can if you wish apply a second coat in the same way.

Then do the same with the wax. It should come up great !!!

If you can't find the gunstock wax, use any good carnauba car wax. I could not find it anywhere and that's what the gun store suggested.

Hi Spud,

I am from UK too but live and work in Kuwait - gigging wilderness! No live music, no bars or social meeting places!

Anyway, I have checked nline and the only ginstock oil is the 'Synthetic Gun stock oil' - is that the same or can I use Tru-oil instead? I can get that.

Once I finish the back of the neck, is it the same for the fretboard?

Ta,
Jim

Hay mate. Welcome. I understand what you are saying about the gigging wilderness of the ME. It took me a while to get gigs in dubai, but now its thriving. I even managed to the the Santana support a few years ago. Im in the UK now, but if you are looking for gigs, better head to dubai or AD.

Cheers,

J
