Hey guys, ive been thinking for a while....and im sure ive come to the decision of another axis as my next ball, if i dont decide to do this to my current guitar. Im wondering how the regular axis sounds with a coil tap installed? is it a beleivable sound? is it close to a tele or strat? also, is there a way where instead of a push/pull pot, i could just have so the pickup is always in single coil mode? thanks for any help.

Yep, you can split the pickups with a push-pull pot.

How do they sound? Okay, not great. Not as good as good single coils (most humbuckers don't split that well), but not bad. But it is handy when you're in a pinch. They will hum, though.

I've been thinking about coil tapping my Axis. I have the DiMarzio 500k push pull pot... All I need is the diagram and the guts to do it

I took my Axis in for this mod at my local shop. The tech really knows his stuff, but when I got it back he said he could only tap the front pickup. He said when he tried the bridge pickup it would just short out. Has any one had this issue?

Sorry I didn't mean to hijack this thread!!!

ok, so if im looking for a good coil sound, this wont give me what im after? is there a good alternative, as i want as close to a tele sound out of it as possible. is there such thing as a humbucker, that is actually a single coil in disguise that would fill the hole and sound great?

I have all 12 of my axii done with push~ pull pots it sounds good
it's not the same as a single sound , but does clean up quite well!As for the shorting out ??I think the tech may be new at it ??there are only 4 wires to choose~ the white and black are the coil ends so unsolder them from the pc 3 way solder to the NC pole and bingo it's done!pull up to turn coil tap on it does humm just like a single coil!

Do it larry!!
It's a reversable process!

Try a Dimarzio "Fred" it has a nice Tele sound split. Ask forum bro Butch Snyder he's used the Fred before

I tell ya what has a lot of twang when split and sounds great as a humbucker. The Steve Morse bridge pickup (also Dimarzio). It flat out rocks and splits very well.

YES, check out the Humbucker From Hell. I install in in the neck of all my Axis guitars. Single coil sound with humbucker punch.

I'm going to be getting a jp reasonably soon(once the guy i'm swapping a prs with gets the cash on top together...).

Its rocking the steve special and air norton, as I have a pair of Axis pups sitting there with no current home, I'm going to fit these when it arrrives.

With the custom option of the middle selection on the jp, would it just be a case of replace the wiring as is, as it should all be 4 conductor and same colours as all dimarzio?

Any help much appreciated

I believe that all Dimarzio pickups have the same wiring colors. However, some early Axis pickups were not four conductor, though I would expect that the ones you have are.

Another great sounding pickup that twangs when split is the DiMarzio Evo2. I had one of those in the bridge position of an Axis-style guitar from another manufacturer (basswood body/maple top/Floyd) and I could cop some great Tele tones from it!

I did it on my Axis when I had it. I liked being able to really get clean tones for arpeggios. I tapped both with one push/pull.
