is their any way I could just use the 3 way switch say in the middle position to have the coils tapped for both pickups...??

Not sure what kind of toggle they use in the Axis but you can always replace it with a 4pdt and do a center-split-both ala Petrucci: http://www.dimarzio.com/media/diagrams/D.pdfhttp://www.dimarzio.com/media/diagrams/D.pdf

HOWEVER, the bigger problem is- the pups in Axis are 2 conductor H. You can NOT split them without moding the pups :)eek:).

On two of my Axis guitars, I put a Humbucker from Hell in the neck position and sonically, it gives me exactly what I want. It is basically a hot-rodded single coil.

I was just playing it again and it really is a stunning Rock sound... maybe I should just leave it as it is and use the Luke for the funk stuff...

Sounds like the voice of reason... Me, I'd be hesitant to do any irreversible mods to my guitars. I'd rather get something to match what it is I'm trying to do since they were engineered with their own voicing. So far I've been able to cover just about anything I've wanted to play with my variety of guitars.

gerry the axis pick is one of the lowest output humbuckers out there..I think stick with it for a little while before you modify. Seriously the lower output gives you a better and sweeter tone High output passive pickups tend to lose the high end and become brittle and middly The bigest surprise when designing that guitar was the lower out put humbucking Bottom line is it is by no means a hot humbucking
mmm... it's sounds great, don't get me wrong... but when I want to play chrisper funkier stuff when I am on a clean setting it dosen't cut the way I'd like it to... now this isn't a criticism of how it sounds.. just the way I'm hearing things.... I'll live with it a while and see how it goes...:)

They've been 4 wire for a long time now - I don't know if that's the same or different from "2 conductor H" (I'm assuming it's different), but I have split mine with the 4 wires and a push/pull mod previously.

gerry I wasnt taking issue but making sure that you understood the design of the guitar. Are you using the same settings on your pedals and amp? Maybe start frolm scratch and voice everything for the guitar....

If you hate push/pull pots, I saw an interisting switch on a f@nd@r yesterday I was using to try out some pedals at GC (the str@t played like **** by the way, I find I can't stand the feel of any guitar after owning my axis). It has a push button in the middle of the knob, you just tap the top of the knob to switch into single coil mode, and then again to go back. I need to find this switch, if I do, I'll post where I can find it. Pretty cool idea, even if it did come on a f@nd@r.

BP.. I know what you are saying and it's cool..:D I allways gig with 2 guitars... usually the Luke and another guitar... I basically have my rig set up for the Luke and how it sounds... if I think about it the Axis is just a different beast.. equally as good.. just different... good learning experience for me...:)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news...but a humbucker is not going to sound like a single coil. If you don't want to mod the guitar (which I agree with), and you don't want a push/pull switch, you should either just get used to the humbucker sound for clean, or use your Luke for the funk tunes....or get an ASS with the 5-way switch. Don't switch the pickups out...the stock pickups are what makes the axis sound so damn good.
Blah Blah Blah
Get a wah for the funk stuff, and I guarantee nobody will walk up to you between songs and say "Man, your band is pretty good, but on that last song, your tone sucked....you really should have had a single coil"

By the way, do you have pics of the axis and the luke????

But MM90s are a great cross- you get the best of both worlds. They clean up really well and sound great with a ton of gain. (Though with that much gain you'll get a bit of hum.)

Just my own opinion ... but I used to have a Super Sport HH and I find I prefer the versatility of the MM90 Sport for those reasons.

That said, it's hard to beat the Axis buckers for full on rock tones if that's what you need.

I have also done this in the past- convert the tone control to a bass roll off. This cuts the gain somewhat. It's a simple mod that involves moving the cap and changing it's value. Takes about 3 minutes to do.

Ok guys.. I've had my Axis for just over a week now and I love the guitar, but I am finding the pickups just a bit too powerful... what would you sugest I do..?? I would like a lower output pickup and a bit clearer sounding... I do a lot of choppy funky rythym stuff...

Sounds to me like you need to lower the pickups-not easily done though. You'll need to rout into the body (a job best done by an expert)
I would suggest routing a little on the deeper side and then shimming the pickups with dense foam. This way you can adjust a little to taste.
Now, before the purists jump on my ass......You say you love the guitar and the playability but you wish the pups had less output and more clarity, right? These pups are not super hot, they're fairly clean-I'd simply lower and continue the love affair with that swwet axe!
