Hi members,

I wanted to ask if any of you guys have experience reshaping axis neck. The goal is that the neck of my axis has the profile of a silhouette. my luthier warned me that the truss rod could break out of the channel after a reshape.

Any comments are welcome!

Cheers

I think you and your luthier are on a maiden voyage. I can't find any meaningful hits on the forum for a reshape. His concern is valid, it is not a trivial modification without risk. My assumption is he is going to use a combination of calipers and a profiling gauge to "trace" a similar depth and shape to your Axis. I don't know how much anyone here can add that he doesn't know already. I recall your feelings from the last thread so won't try to talk you out of it. All you can do is vet and trust your luthier, encourage him to go slow/steady, and hope you like the result.

I've had one of my necks (Morse) reshaped (by Tommy Alderson- forumite here and tech for Deep Purple). I believe he did the basic shaping with a furniture scraper, and did what felt right to him. (Profile is somewhere between a worn down Morse and a Luke.) Came out really well. But he'd done it a number of times before and he knew what he was doing.

Personally I think it would be hard to match a specific profile doing this by hand. But if there are certain "meaty" areas you want to thin out, you might be happy.

Funny enough. I was thinking of shaping my silhouette like my axis neck. I was going to take a mold of the axis neck to see what the differences are and start sanding. *** Slowly *** Then re-oiling and waxing.
