Axis or Wolfgang ?

Hi there,
I've been doing a bit of research into these guitars and trying to figure out which one I want. No guitar shops around here stock either so I will be ordering one of ebay.
I like the Axis because its not a signature guitar, missing a tone knob might not be good for those warm neck pickup sound.
Wolfgang I love the arch top, don't like having EVH's signature, it has a tone knob.
For some reason, I'm not sure why, but I like the Axis more.
Maybe its that ugly Peavey logo, I know silly to be picky over stupid things :)

Do these guitars sound pretty much the same ? I guess the necks are very similar.

The title is ment to be Axis or Wolfgang.

cheers

Honestly, I never liked the Wolfgang at all. The Axis is pure rock n' roll. You could always get an Axis Super Sport (that has the tone knob). With the regular Axis I doubt you'd have a problem getting a great neck pickup sound.

Thanks Phil,
Do the Axis SS come with a floyd rose ?
Floyd is something I want :)

The neck pickup sound I'd like to get is that Slash sound at the beginning of Estranged were he dials most of the tone out. But I'm sure I could do with out.

I played and OLP ernieball licsenced thing and it was pretty crap, but I guess thats because its korean, cheap timber, cheap labour, cheap quality, etc...
So I'm sure USA Ernie balls are heaps better.

thanks again.

Bullseye, I don't believe the Axis SS comes with a floyd. You can get it with a vintage trem or hardtail. You should just go with the regular Axis with a floyd. I'm sure you'd be able to without the tone knob.

The Wolfgang is actually a very well made, quality instrument. I had a very high dollar Wolfgang that I sold once I bought an Axis. The Axis became my main guitar and the Wolfgang just sat in it's case. I just liked the feel of the Axis' neck better, the Wolgang neck is a little beefier, bigger frets and flatter on the fretboard. I also like the pickups better in the Axis, they are not as 'mushy' sounding as the Wolfie....and while we're on the subject, the Axis' body is more comfy to play than the Wolfie. The Wolfgang's archtop made my forearm sore after playing for any period of time.

but all in all it's apples vs oranges...two totally different guitars, and this is a EBMM forum so you know what kind of responses you'll be getting;)

Thanks Lord Tone and Phil,

Yep I realised I'd get a biased opinion coming here :) but thats what I wanted :)

I do like how the fretboard is arched on the Axis.

Are the frets on the wolfgang jumbo frets ?

cheers

Because this is a EBMM site, I don't want to exceed what would be considered a reasonable answer to your question.

I have both Wolfgangs and Axis custom guitars (because that's ALL I play).

The Axis, in theory, is a "signature" guitar as much as the Wolfgang is. Whether or not it has a "sig" on it is a moot point.

The radius on the Wolf is 15" (flatter), and the Axis is 10" (arched), and as prev mentioned, larger frets, beefier back profile, and wider at the last fret by a 16th. Different pickups on both guitars and different sounds. One is arched and the other isn't. Same nut size, and one is in production and the other isn't.

I honestly like certain things about both, however the neck & frets on the Axis is the absolute BEST in existence!! I also like the single knob better, the tremolo, the headstock, and strap buttons (among other things) more on the Axis.

Although I really like my Wolfgang guitars, I "LOVE" my Axis guitars!!

Be thankful they're still in production - now go get one while you're able to!!!

Thanks TNT,
So the Wolfgang is wider at the 16th fret, didn't the Axis get wider when they changed from EVH signature to AXIS as well ?

I thought Peavey stopped making the Wolfgang. Maybe I'm wrong.
The Peavey Wolfgang is now the HP...for Hartley Peavey. They changed a few things because Eddie has the rights to the design and name...something he did'nt get with the EBMM.

You'll be seeing the "new" EVH Wolfgang this year probably...basically a Peavey Wolfgang with the scoop cut out of the headstock

Bull,

The Axis is 2 3/16 at the last fret and I believe the Wolf is 2 1/4 (1/16th more). But, just so you should know, try both the Axis and Luke neck styles at music store - you will love them!!!!!!

The Luke is basically same neck/frets as the Axis with a slightly flatter (12") fretboard. Both are to die for - no bull!

The let us know what you think!!

Expanding on Tim's idea, you can easily install a dual-concentric pot on the Axis, giving you both tone and volume controls. Two pots sharing one shaft.

Well, it's basically two pots in one-

The pot itself should fit in the same spot, so mounting isn't a problem at all.

Pick which pot of the two you want to be volume (I use the top one on mine) and wire it up just like the old pot. Wiring up the tone pot is pretty straight-forward too. Email CS for the Axis Sport wiring diagram (or any other, for that matter). But you just run one wire from the tone pot to the volume pot and then solder a capacitor from the middle lug of the tone pot to ground. (Run a wire from any ground point.)

If you're handy with a soldering iron it's a cinch, if not a tech could do it quite easily.

I've had a few wired up and they're handy. Got one on my Morse to control piezo volume and coil splitting- you can see it here:
