This issue comes up from time to time. Here's what I recall from these threads ...
The pickups are the same on the Axis/EVH, Sport and Super Sport. The lack of a tone knob on the Axis is going to brighten it up slightly. The other consensus seems to be that the pickups are closer to the strings on the Axis as a result of the Floyd. These things are easily rectified if they're issues.
Also, it may be that the Floyd and locking nut add to the tone. But if that's an issue, get an Axis.
