Hi guys. First off, I'm a new member here and have been interested in Ernie Balls since I started playing guitar (10 years ago). Don't currently have a MM, but I'm in the process of saving up for one and had a couple of questions:

1. Feel wise, is there much difference between the Silo and the Axis? I ask this because my first and main love has always been the axis. I currently play a strat in my band and, though the sound is nice, I always remember the first time I tried a quilted red SS with a finished maple neck. It was like butter and I've yet to play another guitar that had that combination of speed and comfort. I could get a silo for cheaper (and eventually would like to buy one anyway), but the axis is my foremost choice. Any thoughts?

2. For those of you with axis guitars, what string gauge do you use? I like using 10's, and was wondering if any of you have had any issues with changing gauges. Does it effect playability much?

3. In the band I'm in, our other guitar player plays a tele through a mesa boogie lonestar. Currently I'm playing a strat through a deville. Our whole thing is he covers the high end of the pectrum, where I provide a lower sound. I know that with a MM, that'll give me more bottom end. My worry is with distortion. I had a bad experience years ago with a certain unnamed brand guitar's dimarzios. They sounded VERY fuzzy with no definition. Does the distortion have a nice breakup? You know, not too muddy with just enough bite (I realize this is subjective, just looking for a general idea).

By the way, I'm a member of a multitude of internet forums of different kinds, and you guys are by far the nicest people I've come across. I can't wait to be a part of the MM community!:D

to answer your question

My setup for gig at the moment is my Axis Super Sport (HH and MM90 with Piezo) through a hotrod deluxe. I'm selling my Silo spec cause it ain't getting anylove now.

As for distortion, the Axis SS is either a very clean and liquid sound machine or a hard riff killing distortion one. You can even get very decent Jazz tone with that guitar

you can be wrong with an Axis Supert Sport :p

My latest guitar showed up about 2 weeks ago, the honeyburst Axis. Once I played it, I realized that it covered my Silo Special like a blanket and then some. The SS is now on it's way to a new owner.

I have another Axis w/ MM90's that will be here in about 10 days. That should just about do it tone wise with everything else I have.

I really liked the Silo Spec, but the Axis just makes me smile every time I plug it in. I found tones I didn't think existed in it, especially clean.

It really comes down to what you're looking for tone-wise though. Everyone here has an opinion, play them and see.

The Axis is a fine guitar, but I much perfer the Silhouettes. IMO they feel so much more comfortable. Plus they sound so great when playing the neck pickups.

Welcome!

I think that no matter what you go with (Axis or Silo), you'll love it. There is something about EBMM guitars that sets them WAY apart from anything else. After you've bought one EBMM, you'll want...no, NEED, another!! (They're addictive.) I have both Axis and Silos on my (ever-growing) wishlist.

PS Have you tried a Luke? :D

As a relative newcomer, I have to agree! It's the only forum I've bothered to strick around on! There are lots of really helpful and genuinely friendly people here.

I've never even seen a Luke in person. I'm just a bit put off by active pickups. A friend of mine had a guitar with EMG's in it, and the tone was a bit stale in my opinion. I AM liking the Dirge though. Looks pretty damn sexy.

Also, I'd like to buy at least 2 axis' before i purchase a silo. Already looking into another ball, and I don't even have the first one.

Wow. Thanks sixtyfour! I'm pretty much sold on the axis, but again, I wouldn't mind buying a Silo in the future (just to have something with that single coil spank).

Your description of the axis neck explains a LOT about why I found it so comfortable. I think the only other neck that came (somewhat) close was a 57 hotrod neck that I tried out. It played wonderfully, but my mind still goes back to 9 years ago when I tried that axis.

Thank you guys soo much. I'm trying to work out a deal at the moment on a custom axis made for a friend of mine who lives in atlanta. It's an outlandish color schemed axis with a rosewood fretboard. As soon as I find out more details, I'll let you all know!
