I was wondering if there is a way to identify Axis pickups. I'm always wary of buying an Axis used, because I want the original design pickups.

I saw what I thought was a new one at GC that was gorgeous, and at a great price with the clearance sale, but it looked like either it was played a bit in-store, or purchased and then returned withing their 30 day return policy. My paranoid mind makes me worried that someone could have swapped out the pickups. If I understand, Axis pickups are Custom Dimarzio's, that are not available aftermarket, correct?

This is correct. You will probably be unable to take them out, but the neck one will say 'N1' on the back and the bridge one says 'B2'.

If you are familiar with these guitars they are easy to spot, but sadly that does not help you!

Thanks Tim, that's good to know. I'm a little familiar, but not to point of taking one apart. Yes, I think GC would frown upon taking the pickups out to examine them!!

There's certain guitars like the Axis, and also the Fender EJ model where the pickups are specific to that guitar's sound and you can't get those exact pickups anywhere else. I respect that and like the fact that those parts are unique.

GC has 30 day guarantee so if unsure, take it home and disassemble the same day and get back with the guitar in case you suspect a pickup swap -- doubt that happens that often really.

You know, I think if they have a tech available when you are there, you might ask him if you could check. It is super easy. Just slack the strings and unscrew the two screws and look. I'd just do it one at a time. Honestly, I don't think GC would have that big of an issue with it.

You scratch the top very easily when trying to bring out pickups with strings just slackened. And the wires might be soldered on tight so you can't pull them out far enough.
