I agree that the credit card would be too thick. Guitar picks work well and come in varying thicknesses so it's easier to switch them out. You'll want to trim them to fit better but they still work well.
The shim I put in my EVH neck is sheilding foil. I folded it over several times to get it to the right thickness and even made it in the shape of the original shim from the factory.
It takes trial and error so be patient. A very small amount of shim makes a huge difference.
I agree with an earlier sentiment that you want to mak sure your truss rod is adjusted properly before you bother shimming. For that matter, you want your bridge set up perfectly too. Especially with a non floatinng Floyd. Get it all set up correctly first. Then look at shimming.
