I'm considering buying a beautiful PBB axis, but I'm wondering if the pickups can be split? I know they can't in the stock configuration, but I'm wondering if they have they wires for it, because in that case I can just put in a push pull volume pot.

I did a search and found a discussion on this forum entitled "Change pickups in Axis?" In this thread Hbucker is talking about the stock EVH/AXIS pups and says...

"Yes, the Axis and EVH are the only place those pickups are used. For the EVH they were two conductor. For the Axis, they are 4 conductor."

reference:change pickups in axis thread

Furthermore I went to DiMarzio.com and went through every single humbucker and it's specs and saw only one that had anything but 4 conductor wiring. It was the PAF 36th Anniversary Bridge and it has 1 or 4 conductor wiring listed in the specs. Strange to me.

Summary: Its a safe bet that the Axis in your question has 4 conductor wiring.

If you wanna hear an Axis check out my myspace.
Ive coil tapped my Axis and you can hear it on 'great gig on the fly'
Majority of my recordings on there have been Axis and/or Supersport.

Just if you want indication of what it can do!

Now I got my newly aquired axis soldered together like it says on this diagram:

Dimarzio3wppsplitvolume.gif

And it works fine - except that it only taps to the inner coil on the neck pickup, on the bridge pickup, it taps to the outer coil. Which actually makes perfect sense according to the diagram, but I'm wondering why Dimarzio has drawn up this, and written that it activates the inner coils only. Is there any specific reason not to wire the bridge pickup like the neck pickup, using the white for hot, the black for ground, and the red and green for split wires, thus enabling it to have the two inner coils active, when split?

When I get the chance I will check how mine is wired.
Whats best way to check which coil it is? Just tap it?
Not sure as that might not give a good indication as they are single unit.

I will see how it goes anyway in morning.

I was kinda choked when I had a tech tap my previous Axis. He said the tap wouldn't work in the neck position as it just shorted out. WTF?

Well I'm pretty annoyed by this. I thought that was total BS and he just wasn't trying very hard. Maybe my new Axis, I should just do it myself.
