Hi all - I have an ash Axis Sport. Many ppl seem to believe that these babies sound best with P90's (MM90's)... can I change my DiMarzio humbuckers out for P90's? If so can I buy/use MM90's? If not, what P90 pickup do you guys recommend? Thanks all, Enda

I don't know if you can make a seamless swap. I think some routing might have to be done, but not entirely sure. I know that there are mounting brackets that help, but can't confirm that. I know that both DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan make some quality pickups. I'm sure there are other more boutique companies that produce some quality ones as well.

At one point several years ago, Dimarzio made a standard humbucking size pickup that was claimed to have a P90 sound. I've never heard it so I can't comment and I don't know if it's still in production. You might want to inquire with Dimarzio. That would not require any routing.

EDIT: it's the Bluesbucker. It's still listed on Dimarzio's site under vintage output humbuckers.

I don't think it would be an issue, other than the height of the pickups perhaps. Have a look at the Bare Knuckle Mississipi Queen P90, I've heard nothing but good things about this pup. Here's a vid with a Tele:

I would like to buy your original Axis Sport humbuckers from you, please send me a PM if interested. I'll pay you a fair price. Good luck finding the right P90's!

I wouldn't do it. I have had both and sold the MM90 one because I liked the HH one better. You would have to do some routing to the body and at that point your mod isn't reversible (unless you have a pickguard) I would either look at changing humbuckers or buying something with MM90's in it already. An Albert Lee would make a great companion guitar (have one too)

The MM90s don't fit the humbucker rout.

+1 you can use P90 in a humbucker case like I did on my former ASS

I have used Phat Cats from Seymour Duncan great pups

Thanks for the responses; ok so if the MM90's don't fit I'm not sure I want to go down the aftermarket route again; I've been there before & had more expensive misses than hits... Considering selling my HH Sport now & going for a MM90 Super sport... it never ends :) Thanks...

Duncan P-90s

IDK how they sound though. But no routing that I know of - should be a direct fit

IMHO, the humbucker sized P-90s are close, but not the same. The pole piece position is slight different. The coil wind structure slightly different.
