Axis/Sport/Supersport specs

So it's not an immediate concern as I've yet to find myself a band to go and 'rock out with' but when I do I'm going to want a backup guitar for my Axis.

And if we're being honest the only guitar fit to backup an Axis is another axis.

The key things are that the spare Axis has 'that neck' and 'those pickups'.

I'm not overly fussed about having another one with a Floyd, a vintage trem or preferably stop tail will suffice. And given that I'm playing a fair bit of Cream at the minute something with a tone control to roll off for that 'Women' tone would be useful.

So the question is, do all humbucker equipped Axis's, irrespective of whether they're an Axis, Axis Sport, or Axis Supersport all have the same neck profile, and Dimarzio p/ups ?

This train of thought was prompted by a Black Axis Sport on evil bay.
It's one of the really plain unbound ones, and the humbuckers have 2 black bobbins rather than the 'zebra' ones on my Axis. Are they the same ?

Yes, they do have the same pickups and neck profile... provided you stick to a humbucking model (remember, some Sports came in Single-Single-Humbucker and 3xSinglecoil configurations back in the old days, and there's always the MM90 versions of the Sport and Super Sport).

There are differences between individual guitars, however. Hand finishing at the factory means the necks can feel very slightly different, and my Rosewood board necks don't feel exactly the same as my Maple board necks - which isn't to say they are different shaped, but just that they have a slightly different feel when playing them... Another difference is in the body woods; an Axis Sport is Ash, a Super Sport is Basswood and Maple like an Axis, unless you get the Super Sport MM90, which is Ash with a Maple cap. Different bridges give you slight differences in tone even with the same pickups, not to mention different setups - my stoptail Axes have very, very low action. Also, I'm convinced that wiring up the coil split for 5-way switching and adding a tone control "tames" the pickup output slightly. All of these tiny variations combine to give each guitar its own character, but the differences are subtle. Playing two humbucker Axes through the same gear doesn't require tweaking the amp or pedal board settings, for instance, except perhaps when using the split coil settings (positions 2 & 4 on the 5-way).

One thing I've learned about EBMM guitars in general is that the quality control is so good that I have no qualms about buying one of their guitars on-line, before I actually get to play it - which is not something I would feel comfortable doing with any other brand I can think of off the top of my head, with the possible exception of PRS.

The thing is BP that the Floyd equipped Axis was a present from my wife so much as a vintage trem equipped Super Sport may well be 'THE' guitar for me, the amount of strife it would cause at home to be seen favouring another guitar would be simply epic.

a axis with 3 single coils man i got have me one of those. kinda reminds me of this. if anyone from ebmm wants to chime in on this guitar that would be great. i know its evh's but was it a request to be made or expirement. anyone have a pic of a axis sport with 3 single coils i need to be looking for one.

Here's a nice one they have a Royal Music - they actually have three or four Sports in the S/S/S configuration right now. Their prices aren't the lowest, but they have the best selection of NOS Sports in North America, I'd wager...

I've owned piezo guitars in the past (Parker Fly and Nitefly) and I have an acoustic that sees the light of day five times a year, and I can say with some authority that I don't miss the piezo at all... But I take great comfort in knowing that if I ever do start missing a piezo, I know where to get one I'll like!
