I've been itching to get a Super Sport or Sport with MM-90's, and I've actually got a good opportunity to buy one for a good price.

My question is, how do they sound, and do you like it?

I've owned a Sport that was humbucker loaded, and it didn't quite have the sound I was looking for. That's probably the only apprehension I have about buying another. I'm so used to the basswood body-maple cap of the Axis and Super Sport.

I've got an older Sport MM90. Hardtail with a maple neck. As Rob said, great woody sound from the neck, for sure. Bridge can get pretty twangy, but big sounding. In general I'd say it has an overwound single coil flavour. Lots of clarity and chime, more mids than a single coil.

With a bit of gain it's got tons of bite. That's where it shines for me. Also sounds great with gobs of gain, though it doesn't sound like a humbucker. Half way between a single coil and a bucker.

From clean to mean with a roll of the volume pot. I don't know why I waited so long to get one. Everybody should have one of these in their collection.

I got the ASS MM90. Well worth the money. I was after something Tele like but more versatile. The MM90s have the ability to go from twangy chimey cleans to filthy rock, and with some generous EQing you can get some good thick overdrive sounds. If anything, I think the bridge unit is a little underpowered (anyone else find this to be the case?), but it is certainly not unusable.

I've only had mine for a few weeks, so havent really explored it properly. And I have the trem version, which is bound to affect the tone.

Well just to reiterate a few facts to help you decide. The Axis Sport was solid ash bodied, and so is the Supersport MM90 (with the addition of a maple cap). Basswood is only used on the humbucker Supersports...

Thanks,

I guess I'm trying to figure out if the Axis Sport/SS with MM-90's is for me. I definitely would like an overwound, in-between-a-single-coil/humbucker sound. The only way for me to try one is to buy one and see if it works. At worst, I can just sell it if it's not what I'm looking for.

What musical styles do you think the MM-90's can handle? My Silo Special has EMG's, so I'm not too concerned with the high gain territory.

I play mostly hard rock and alternative, and I'm slowly getting into some rock-oriented country. Do you guys think it could handle that?

I say go for it. I've not had my Axis Sport MM90's for very long yet, but I find these pickups to be wonderful. Incredibly versatile....very nice clean, but not to be overlooked for their ablility to handle distortion. Silent circuit helps too!

Can they handle rock/alternative/country....Hell yeah.

Tony, you will love the sound of the MM90 s !! They are great for just about any style you can think of, apart from major distortion !! But for Blues Rock, Country, Country Rock, they are astounding !! Across between a good humbucker, and a great single coil !!

Here is a pic of mine, i dont really use the piezo though.

The EBMM MM90 is my favourite sounding pickup...an ASS with them is the best possible guitar for me....I play mostly Blues now, the sort of thing generally purveyed by people whose surname is King!!

I'll describe my ASS mm90 this way. They're very quiet and are very NOT in your face. It's probably the best description I can come up with. I have another guitar (see my sig) more like an Axis from a pickup perspective and by comparison....it is VERY in your face.

If you're looking for one, there's a white one at Daddy's Junky Music. I keep seeing it dropping in price on their website (I've bought several guitars from several of their stores). They're barely over $800 on it now!

I have my eye on a couple on eBay. I have a choice between hardtail and trem (trem model is a bit more in price).

I think I'm going to get one of them and just try it out. Again worst case scenario, I can just sell it.

People I have spoke too talk about not being able to get tones they like straight away, usually higher gain tones. Though they are possible, its not what the MM90's are best suited too Such a wide range of clean or slightly overdriven clean tones are available, its not a straight ahead rock axe or a clean strat. Classy.
