Hello forumites!
I have a few questions of you fine folks:
Are the pickups in my new Axis SuperSport the same as the Axis pickups, just four-conductor? Which stock Dimarzios are they closest to?
Has anyone tried putting covers on their SS pickups? Do stock Dimarzio covers fit?
Is anyone else finding the neck pickup a bit muddy? Output and balance are fine, just looking for a way to get more string definition. Solutions?
By the way, I have now discovered personally that the only thing better than a Musicman guitar is two Musicman guitars (well, maybe three now that the AL will be available with a rosewood board for this year only...). I'll post pictures of my two beauties when I can get a digital camera together, but right now I'm sooooo happy with my Silhouette Special and Axis SuperSport premium quilttop! Rock on!-Eric

Welcome to the forum Lance, and good choices for the geetars. But you cant go wrong with any EBMMs so that's cool. I dont have an Axis or an ASS (Axis Super Sport), but I believe thet both have the same pups. From what remember, the neck pup is closest to Air Norton and the bridge a Tone Zone or something. Dont take my word for it, someone with both geetars will giove you the accurate answer.
By the way, give us some details of the geetars you've got untill we can see the pics :D!

Naah. I don't find the neck pickup on my Super Sport Muddy. I string my guitars with Regular Slinkys (10-46) and at the moment i play mostly trough a Rivera M100. I pay mostly classic rock, so i use only moderate distortion.

Sorry I don't have any solution to your problem. But when it comes to guitar sound every detail counts. Try experimenting with different strings, amp settings and so on. I myself found a better string definition by using a stiffer, sharper pick (JD Stubby's 3 mm) instead of softer rounder ones. And always use good quality cables. Poor cables can suck your tone.

And welcome to the forum BTW.

Roubster, here's the details (I'm trying to borrow a camera this week). Silhouette Special in Medallion Gold/matching headstock; white pearloid guard with pearl-topped Q-Parts knobs; RW board; piezo trem. I pulled the pickups and put in some of Jim Wagner's (WCR) SR strat pickups (best I've ever found) and some quality 300K pots to open-up the SRs; Schaller Megaswitch so position #3 is neck+bridge, and separated the electrical paths of the mags and piezos to the discrete output jacks (to access the piezos you have to plug a second cord in). This guitar is the Ultimate Players Strat.
The Axis SuperSport is Transparent Orange with matching headstock; totally killer premium quilttop; hummers; trem; RW board; Q-Parts knobs (hate the cheap creme Strat knobs that ship with it). Besides being a spectacular looker, this is my ROCK guitar. A local guitar god who's seen me play for years commented "Eric, when you play your new guitar you play lead way better than I've ever heard you play before". So much for inspiring instruments! It's the killer neck.
I'm thinking of adding a third MM. The Albert Lee is available this year in the Anniversay colors (black with gold hardware), but with a RW board. Black with three black MM90s, Black Ice pickguard...my temperature is rising.
P.S. My third "main" guitar is a Paul Reed Smith Hollowbody II Artist Package Piezo in Ruby Red with about-to-be-installed Wagner Goodwoods. It goes to the high-zoot and "pure acoustic" gigs, while my MMs ride in a double bag to all my (frequent) gigs. They are the perfect working guitarists' instruments (and I work on other peoples' guitars every day for a living). At the music store I work at we have nine staff members playing twelve MMs; pretty much sums-up the strength of my/our conviction!-Eric.
