Hi everyone! :)
Max from Italy here.
Music Man guitars and basses lover, owner of some awesome MM beauties:

1) Silhouette
2) Luke III HH
3) Axis Super Sport HH

I recently purchased the Axis and, as soon as I brought her home, I noticed she needed some restoration.
Frets are almost new, beside tons of (removed) oxide, so this 2009 Axis was played a little through these years.
Maintenance, however, is truly of a very poor standard.

In any case, restoration process already took place and she's coming back to life.
I've to order volume and tone knobs and a set of new saddles (D one has blocked screws and there's no way to move them).

About the subject of this topic, I had a look to the circuit and wiring and I noticed that someone, most probably, put his hands inside control hole (instead of keeping them somewhere else inside pants) and did a little mess.
Pickup switch should work this way here:

1) bridge humbucker full
2) outer coils of both humbuckers (parallel)
3) both humbuckers full (parallel)
4) inner coils of both humbuckers (parallel)
5) neck humbucker full

Currently, instead, pickup switching works this way:

1) bridge humbucker full
2) outer coil of bridge humbucker (split)
3) both humbuckers full (parallel)
4) inner coil of bridge humbucker and outer coil of neck humbucker (parallel)
5) neck humbucker full

Now, I don't know if this job has been deliberately done or by mistake or if this was the original wiring in 2009 (but I don't think so...), but I don't care: I want the guitar back in its original configuration.
I found the official diagram here in the forum (thanks guys!!!) and I already found how to easily fix the issue (you can see a picture of current situation here): black and white wires of neck pickup are soldered to the "wrong" pin (they should be soldered together with green wire) and neck pickup's hot (red wire) must be rewired correctly.
I just have a doubt about the superswitch: the guitar is from 2009 and in the diagram a note reports that in 2011 there has been a modification (Rev B.).
Switch changed from RC778W to MC776W.
My question is: are there any relevant differences among these switches??

I had a look and it seems the switch is ok and it matches the one in the diagram, but you never know... :)
As far as I know, the original switch could have been changed and this could also explain the rewiring operations.

Some pictures of the beauty in attachment.

Thanks a lot in advance for any help!!

Bongiorno Max! Welcome to the forum and congratulations on a fantastic guitar!

The switches are electronically doing the same thing but the physical arrangement of the terminals (and therefore the wires) is slightly different. For the newer one, MC776W, the terminals have a logical linear arrangement...

COM 54321 54321 COM
COM 54321 54321 COM

but the older one (778W from 1998 to 2011) they do this...

COM 54321 4321 5 COM
COM 54321 4321 5 COM

...(position 1 is bridge pickup and 5 is neck pickup). You'll just have to "translate" between the two - make sure any wire that goes to 5 on your diagram goes to the real 5 on your switch. (Or contact Customer Service and ask for the older diagram).

They do look physically different, here's a screenshot of the switches (from a Silhouette Special diagram) which reflects the difference.

Hey mate!
Thanks a lot for your reply.

I see my switch is the older one (778W), now.
The fix for the issue should be the same, since someone moved black and white wires of neck pickup away from PIN where the green wire is and this should be the same for both switches.
I can assume they did this modification intentionally now (switch has not been replaced), even if it makes no sense to me (why should you use splitted bridge pickup alone???), but I would not discuss other people's tastes here... :)

I will shot a message to MM CS to ask the older wiring diagram, just to be sure.

Thanks a lot again!

Uhm....I'm attempting to send a message to CS using the US online form, but it doesn't work at the moment: the Send button does nothing.
I sent it through italian MM site...just hope this will work!

Hi there!
Still no answer from italian CS about 2009 Axis Super Sport wiring diagram.
And still I cannot send the request to US CS by online form, since buttons do no work.
Did you have the possibility to notify them and get some answers?
There's any way to have the 2009 wiring diagram here, maybe?
As for the 2011 one...

I notifed them yesterday. They cannot replicate the problem but are looking into intermittent issues that could be causing it. Can you send me a private message with a) your email address, and b) tell me what browser and version and operating system you are using to access the page?

Thanks!

Ok. Issue solved: it was a pending Firefox update!
Update installed and online form works fine! :)
Let's wait for the wiring diagram now!

Ok, wiring reverted to original!

Now pickup switching works as expected: I cannot play her yet (I'm still waiting for new saddles and knobs....Italians do it better is a wrong legend! One of these days I'll write to EBMM guys and ask them to kick those italian lazy asses...), but I tested with a tester and by touching poles with a screwdriver and it works!

For other owners reference:

1) bridge, full humbucker, 16.5 ohm
2) bridge + neck, outer coils (parallel), 4 ohm
3) bridge + neck, full humbuckers (parallel), 8 ohm
4) bridge + neck, inner coils (parallel), 4 ohm
5) neck, full humbucker, 15 ohm

I cannot wait to play this beauty, but I've to wait for new saddles....

Enjoy some neck pictures as well: some wax and oil and neck and fretboard look awesome again!

Well, I desired this guitar for longtime...exactly as she looks, that quilted top, that color, that rosewood, matching headstock.
It's one of the finest instruments I put my hands on.

Now I just need to play it! But...I still need new saddles.

Hey Max, beautiful guitar!

I remember having had a AS or ASS (can't remember) that had some similar "issue", although I think it had bridge coils in parallel (pos. 2) and neck coils paralleled (pos. 4). It might have been done by the, or one of the pre-owners, but at least the one that sold it to me didn't report anything, so ....

Happy for you, that everything worked out fine for you so far!

I don't know why people does such things, but they do! :)
The guy I bought the guitar from seemed not aware about the mods and, most probably, someone else or a previous owner did them.
He said "I've another Axis and this one can play brighter" and now I know why... :)

It doesn't have any sense to me, but it's a matter of taste!
In any case, now it's reverted to original wiring and she will play as she have to.

Finally, tomorrow I'll get new saddles and volume knob, so I can finish the job and play the guitar!
Tone knob will arrive later, but I don't care! I'll fix the broken one until then.

...and finally.....she's ready to rock again!
Got saddles and volume knob today.
Fixed tone knob, it must resist until the new one will arrive...and this could require another month.
I wonder why people does mods to these guitars: they sound AMAZING!
These DiMarzio Custom pickups are killer...great tones with clean and crunch, awesome 2 and 4 switch positions.
Definitely, this is a great guitar with a wonderful neck, very different from Silho or Luke ones.
And the 2 pivots MM Tremolo is one of the best you can find around.
Setted-up with 9.5-44 EB Slinky strings.

Just a last wax hand to the neck and....let's go!

Some pictures and thanks a lot to everyone who helped me to complete the job!
