Hi,

Just finished up an intense A/B session between my 2013 R8 (with the stock custombuckers) and my new-to-me stock 2006 Axis super sport. I've come to the conclusion that I need to switch out the stock PUPs in the Axis for something a little more PAF'ish. That being said, I really dig positions 2 and 4 with the stock PUPs. I'm just looking for something a little more clear and articulate in positions in 1 and 5.

So, what PAF-voiced pickups will do the job but at the same time retain some decent, balanced quack in positions 2 and 4?

Would the 36th Annie's get the job done?

Anyone have any luck with SD Antiquities, or Seth Lovers? Can you even wire these sets up to a 5-way?

Thanks for any input!

I think the stock pups are great, if you do change make sure you keep the originals as you cannot buy them.

Jamie Humphries swapped the originals for some 36ths.......he then changed them back. I agree with JamieM, love the original Pickups, you can find them all over the EBMM range.

Just be advised that chasing tone is an expensive endeavour because it's highly subjective.

My suggestion is to nail down specifically what you want out of a new set of pickups that you can't get out of the current ones. Then contact some of the pickup makers directly. They'll know their pickups best.

Have fun, enjoy the ride.

Axis and a LP are totally different guitars - construction, woods, bridge... It's not going to sound the same.

Thanks for all the advice!!

Yeah, the stock PUPs are nice. They just seem, to my ears, to be a little muddy on the 1 and 5, and I guess I wasn't expecting that (due to that snappy maple neck and scale length).

But, I've decided to keep 'em in for now - don't want to do anything too rash, eh?

Last night I ran the Axis into my RC Booster and was, well, blown away. Yep, I need more time with the stock PUPs.

Pic(s) to follow!!!

cheers

This is so true. Whatever you do hold onto the originals in case you ever want to go back to them. I've heard a million sob stories over the years from people who have switched out the pickups for something else then sold or lost the originals. We don't sell these pickups unless you have a faulty one to send to us. Once you lose the originals there is no going back.

Dude, it's your guitar!
You change whatever you want to change.
No harm in trying different pups.
People swap pickups in gazillion-dollar boutiques, so
why can't you?

Wolfetone Legend sound very good (I own a set).
I'd maybe do a Marshalhead bridge and Legend Neck.
I've also heard some clips of Manlius Fat Dianes that sounded pretty good.
Also, check out Onamac Windery for some low priced, but absolutely astounding-sounding pickups.

Hope this helps.

But like someone else said, keep original pickups as they are unattainable (unless you buy an Axis).
