Axis VS. Silo (Necks)

Hi Guys,

Just wanna check with you others who owned/played axis's/silo's before, I think the axis's neck is beefier no? Or is it just me? I prefer the axis's neck. Though I love the silo guitar.

Also another observation, had 2 axis's before, the neck was bird's eye maple then. My new '10 silo doesn't have the bird's eye anymore. ( I've seen some pics of old silos with birds eye maple)

My 04 ASS has far more birds eye than my 08 Axis. I would expect that the BFRs should get the very best ones these days. I'm still amazed how the neck/fingerboard on maple/maple guitars often look like one piece of wood.

On feel....I'd agree that the Axis (and ASS) "feel" beefier. (I'm comparing to a sub 1 which should be the same as a silo spec neck).

I think in general the Axis guitar necks have more birdseye than the Silhouette Specials. My '06 SS doesn't have any birdseye either.

The birds eye is pretty much the luck of the draw. The flame necks are nice and play just as well.

I own a few of both, and the Axis necks are beefier than Silo necks. I have no trouble shifting between them.

I may be wrong, but I think the birdseyed necks were pretty much reserved for the signature models (and the Axis, which came from the EVH), while the Silo family got more straight-grained maple. I have four Silo Specials, and there's no birdseye on any of them. All of my Axis/SS guitars have birdseye.

its matter of luck with the birdseye/flame right? ive seen my buddies ebmm full of birdseye.. mine came full flamed all the way through to headstock.. deep flames even..

Over the years I've owned 3 Silo Specials (not at the same time) - a 2004, a 2007, and my current 2010. All of them had plain necks. It is my understanding that is typical for a Silo or Silo Special - maybe you might get a neck with a bit of figure, but expect a plain maple neck.

Now the AL I had a while back did have a figured neck - some birdseye, some flame, but even it wasn't highly figured. The one Axis SS that came through here had a solid rosewood neck - but it was nicely grained.

The Exis necks are thicker than the Silo necks, but I have no trouble playing either. I like the Silo necks just a LITTLE more.

Silos, Silo Specials that I have had do not have much birdseye, like both necks so cant help there to me easy to switch.

Birdseye seems to be hit and miss now days, nature of the beast and wood

The Axis neck is slightly beefier, but to me the biggest difference is in the width: the Axis neck is narrower (same as the Luke's). I also prefer the Axis neck, but the Silo's neck is still awesome, very comfortable, and very playable.

The birdseye/flame/plain issue is surely only of any relevance for those of you who play with the back of the neck facing your audience.
As for neck profiles???? Forget them & do what we smart people do.....buiy a SS & an ASS

FWIW my Silo has some birdseye on it but it doesn't run the whole length of the neck. I'd guess the birdseye was an extra perk and that I got my neck from the 'not good enough to be a signature models' neck' pile... 15 years later, still works great for me.
