A couple of months ago I put a set of Group II flats on my 30th Anniversary SR4. Initially, I really dug the sound, but over time it was less appealing to me. I saved the set of near-new Flea I had taken off, so I put them back on after giving the board a fresh oiling.

The classic Stingray tone is back - the crispness that vanished with the flats has come back in spades. One additional benefit of switching back to rounds is that my hands seem to have built strength from the high tension flats, and my right hand fingerstyle is now faster and more precise.

I'm glad I tried the flats, because while they seem to complement my Fender, I found out that a set of rounds is the best match for my Stingray. YMMV.

Nothing like a fresh set of slinky's except a set of coated.
edit: I would love to try a set of flats on a bongo at least once.

I agree. I tried flats on my Bongo. Nice, but the rounds were better. So Rounds (specifically Slinkies) on the Big Al and Bongo. But I kept flats on my SB14 for when I get in the mood.

I completely switched all my EBs to Super Slinkies again. It's nice to get that zing again.

OK -- played the 30th with Flats at Christmas service this past Sunday. As soon as service was over, one of the other bass players made a bee-line to me and marveled at how he could hear every note. Smooth. Punch. Clear. 30th, Flats.

You're either a bassist or a trebleist. CHOOSE!

That's right, if I wanted zing, I'd play the freaking cymbals.

I'm hopeless in my addiction, but I do understand that some people are going to play rounds. (I mean, I understand that they're going to do it - but I don't understand WHY.)

All in good fun. Boxers or briefs, Democrat or Republican, as long as you're happy.

My 25th (currently my only EBMM - times have gotten REALLY TOUGH!) is sporting the Coated Super Slinkies. Love the feel and tone on these strings.

I tried the Group III flats on my former SR4 and it was a very nice match. I eventually went back to the slinkies on it before sending off to a new home :(

I truly liked the Group III flats but needed a little more 'presence'.

I wish EB would make some half-round (ground-wound) slinkies. Now that would be interesting!!:)

I'm currently giving EB flats a whirl on my Bongo 5H.

I decided to try them because I've found that I tend to roll the highs off on that bass. So, caveman logic say, put less-bright strings on, ugh.

I put them on minutes before the last gig and haven't played much since (the band is taking a much-needed break for the month of December), so the jury's still out... waiting for the placebo effect to die down. So far, I'm a bit surprised... they're not as woofy and muffled as I thought they'd be.

Because you're one or the other. Anything less than commitment is just waffling. Be a man! (perhaps a caveman but still)

;)

I know we are having fun here and thats ok. But seriously, I think half rounds sound great. I am surprised more folks don't use 'em.

But my favorite string is still the EB Slinkies that are put on all MM basses. This is no accident.

I went with the Stage II flats on my SR4, then back to the Slinkys, and then back to the flats; no more waffling (in case Bovine is reading)--I'm strictly flats now and loving them!
