Judgement call

Is the point of this discussion to arrive at a consensus?

Here are artists that you can admit to liking with no fear of reprisal:

Old Genesis
Led Zepplin
Hendrix
The Who
Mahavishnu Orchestra
King Crimson
Steeley Dan
Lou Reed
Joni Mitchell
Willie Nelson
Robin Trower
Leo Kottke
BB King
Robert Johnson
The Dixie Dregs
Peter Gabriel
Beethoven
Bach
Brahms
Eric Clapton
Frank Zappa
Yes
Pink Floyd
Elton John up to Honky Chateau (even this is dicey)
Stanley Clarke
Rush
Jorma Kaukonen
Hot Tuna
Stevie Ray Vaughn
The Doors
John Coltrane
Miles Davis
Thelonious Monk
Etta James
Neil Young
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
The Police
The Rolling Stones
Dave Matthews
Bruce Springsteen
Buddy Guy
Muddy Waters
Memphis Slim
Pat Metheny
The Starland Vocal Band
Gotcha

You can admit to liking any of the above and be considered to have cool, and/or sophisticated tastes.

There are other's, but I think you get the idea.

No, not at all.

It's just a different take on the old "favorite band" question. It's interesting to see how peoples' tastes differ. So no, consensus ain't in it. In fact, I'm surprised at the variety of responses. Some of the lists are made up entirely of stuff I would never choose to listen to.

There are MANY bands I really like (especially the Starland Vocal Band! OOH! :p [nice addition to your list, that]), but very, very few that pass this test.

Hendrix
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Rolling Stones (any era)
The Beatles

The last two may seem cliched, but I've never owned a ton of material by either band so I never got a chance to get tired of them I suppose. I heard Sgt. Pepper on the way home today and I had it turned wide open.

Queens of the stone age
Squarepusher
the clash
operation ivy

paul simon
The Reverend Horton Heat
Karnivool

but pretty much anything with good rythym and melody - i'm not really genre specific.

This will probably be all over the map, but off the top of my head, here goes:

Steely Dan
Led Zep
Matthew Sweet
Jellyfish
Beat Farmers
X
Drive-By Truckers
Grant Lee Buffalo
Richard Thompson
New York Dolls
Hoodoo Gurus
Georgia Satellites
Mott The Hoople
Fountains of Wayne
Buddy Guy

There are lots of other artists I love who didn't make the list because they have one or two (or ten) songs that have been overplayed to the point that I don't need to hear those songs again, and I will change the station if they come on.
