If your favorite band isn't on that list, chances are they're pretty obsolete. I did miss a few really good bands though, but I'm not going to sit here and think about it all day.

You mean the list you wrote? C'mon guy! I love Dream Theater and they arent on your list. Mind you, you're right. The haven't done anything for years  .

Anyone who said ELO..........I'm with ya on that 1! And somebody said Jellyfish....you'll find me there as well.

Queen, RHCP (early stuff), Muse, Ben Folds, Spocks Beard (I only have V but it's fab!), Porcupine Tree, Beatles, Extreme (or anything by Nuno :D ), Dire Straits, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Stonesour (new album has some great tracks), Toto, Eric Johnson, Andy Timmons (all of a sudden! :p ), Steve Morse, Woody Mann........I'm drawing a blank now.................did someone mention the wurzels? :D

+1.

The world of music is vast. VAST.

REALLY REALLY REALLY big. You just can't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is!

With MANY MANY MANY styles.

And there is quality to be found EVERYWHERE, even in music you think is awful or from bands you may deem "obsolete."

We're all guilty of seeing only what we want to see, to one extent or another. But c'mon...saying that "if your favorite band isn't on this list chance are it's obsolete"?

Puh-leeze.

Another thing we're all guilty of is preferring the music of our youth. The older you get, the less excited you get about the latest fad. Eventually whole genres will pass you by, and you'll never notice.

Jondracula, revisit this question in 20 years. Then tell us what's "obsolete."

Here's what I thought of off the top of my head. All of these get heavy airplay on my Ipod.

Steely Dan

Allman Brothers Band

Gov't Mule

Ronnie Earl

Johnny A

Asleep at the Wheel

Marshall Tucker Band

Robben Ford & the Blue Line

Melvin Taylor

Michael Hill's Blues Mob

Michael Burke

Redd Volkaert

Pink Floyd

Jim Campilongo and the Ten Gallon Cats

Lyle Lovett

Duke Levine

Lucinda Williams

Manhattan Transfer

James Brown

A pretty wide variety stylistically, but I love 'em all! Some great, great guitarists on that list.

That comment at the bottom strikes me as pretty funny, since I have a 21 year old son who gigs. He would look at that list and tell you most of THOSE bands are obsolete!

As for your "Average age" question, I'd say judging by the replies to this post that many of us are in our 40's. I'm 45.

The point that we usually tend to stick with the music of our youth is true, as we tend to stick with most things from our youth - research has shown that your values are pretty much set in stone by the time you're 18. Personally, every now and then I get turned onto someone new, but it's pretty rare that I'm impressed with new music. And 95% of what I would hear on FM radio, if I listened to it (satelite radio devotee here), regardless of genre, strikes me as very formulaic and musicially uninteresting - but I'd venture to guess that would be the opinion of most players.

Over the last ten years, most of the new music or players that I've become a fan of has been introduced to me by guys on internet music forums, like this one. That's how I found out about Michael Burke, Johnny A, Joe Bonamassa, Jon Herrington, Redd Volkaert, and several others whom I now dig heavily.

I love the Ray Charles line that Luke quoted about the two kinds of music - good and bad. That's a great thought, but it reminds me of that line from the Blues Brothers film - "We have both kinds of music, Country, and Western." :D

I've replied to this thread before but I have recently re-discovered a band who really should have been so much bigger.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you - Jellyfish!

I like a lot of other bands but the rest of them, I've heard songs that just straight up made me cringe. Some of these I still haven't heard everything from, so this list is subject to change with time

edit: forgot to mention Pink Floyd!
