well, maybe not bass-centric, but in a lot of rock bands, the bass is a bit down played, and i dislike that.

which is why i like jazz a lot (even though i can't play it). it is also why i like bands like dream theater and red hot chili peppers, but i think i'm a little...unknowledgable in the area. what are some good ROCK bands with really good bassists? and maybe some of their good albums?

i know of like...Les Claypool and Billy Sheehan, but i don't know what band Billy plays/played in, and i don't know any good Primus albums.

yeah. not really an EB thread, but...a bass thread?
hope it's not illegal.

Some of the FINEST Rock bass lines of recent years has got to be Tim Commerford of "Audioslave" as well as his stuff on "Evil Empire" by Rage Against The Machine but Audioslave is a must for great Riff-Rock bass. And... to the extreme of that is also the bass work on the Mars Volta's "Deloused in the commatorium" , their new CD "Frances the Mute" comes out soon too and is reported to have very cutting edge rock bass hi-jinx !

Yeah! Commerford!

That Audioslave album is great, I hope they follow it up soon.

Good call, Psychicpet!

A few of my faves:

Paul McCartney (most tasteful lines on Earth....)

John Paul Jones (remeber him?)

James Jamerson (MOTOWN!)

Carol Kaye (look her up if you don't know!)

Jack Bruce

Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello and The Atttractions)

Andy Rourke (The Smiths)

Stanley Clarke (whoa!)

Peter Hook (Joy Division)

Will Heggie (Cocteau Twins, LowLife)

and of course.... Derek Smalls ;)

if you want to hear great bass playing

listen to the album "SMPTE" by the band "Transatlantic". You will be blown away.

It's a supergroup with Pete Trevawas (from Marillion) on bass, Mike Portnoy (from Dream Theater) on drums, Roine Stolt (from The Flower Kings) on guitar, and Neal Morse (from Spock's Beard) on keys & vocals.

Pete Trevawas *always* has great bass lines going on.. check any Marillion album released from 1983 to 1989. (Script for a Jester's Tear, Fugazi, Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws, Season's End). Every Marillion song from that era had great bass. Every single one. I'm telling you, Pete Trevawas is the most under appreciated bass player walking the face of the earth.

Billy Sheehan was originally in a band called Talas. They released two albums in the 80's and then broke up. I think Billy Sheehan was the only consistent member on those two albums...the entire band is different on the 2nd album except for Billy. Many years later a third album was made with the original members. As I recall, the first album was called "Sink Your Teeth Into That" and the second was called "Live Speed on Ice". I have a CD that combines both of those albums onto one disc called "Billy Sheehan: The Talas Years". The 3rd album was called "If We Only Knew Then What We Know Now".

Now go get some of Pete Trevawas' work!

i would suggest,
the who: john entwistle

rancid: matt freeman

the suicide machines: royce's playing on destruction by definition is great, and he plays with his fingers

ALL/descendents: karl alvarez is considered the john patitucci of punk, karl also plays only with his fingers. i would suggest All's mass nerder, breaking things and, live plus one cd's to start, if you get live plus one it has a decesnedents cd with it.

iron maiden: steve harris is great

X: john doe is great as well, his stuff is pretty buried on the recordings though

Wow.. I haven't heard any "X" since the 1980's. Billy Zoom and those sparkly Gretsch guitars! Good stuff.
