YES! Muse is my favorite "new" band! Bellamy rules, too.... (well, not on bass, but in general).

Wow, a LOT of my fav bands/bass players mentioned here. Geddy Lee definitely, and Karl Alverez's fingers are ALL over the place. He's incredible, but I'd personally recommend the ALL albums PRE- Chad Price as singer, as Scott Reynolds and Dave Smalley have far superior voices. Another FANTASTIC Punk/Rock bassist is Steve Youth of 7 Seconds. The bass isn't always 'front and centre' on all their recordings, but check out their album 'Out The Shizzy'. The bass on that album is AMAZING! He's one of my fav's for sure. Probably lots more, but those ones really stick out in my brain. For some 'interesting' bass lines/chords, check out Neds Atomic Dustbin. Nice use of TWO bass players in an indie rock band :) Almost as good as THREE for Spinal Tap's BIG BOTTOM.

muse has some sick lines... flea did de loused for mars volta but did not do the new one, which is an AMAZING cd, and of course jazz all the way esps. Stanlely Clarke with chick corea or even john pett. with corea, thats some sick stuff.

i'm sorry my question wasn't too clear. are there any good slappers and jazzy fingerstyle players? i guess that's asking a lot in a rock band, but i really enjoy that. i know that there are a lot of good, simple rock bass lines, but i want to see if there are any bands with like...bass solos in their songs and stuff.

can you guys tell me more about Mark King too?

can you guys sort of tell me what kind of rock each band is when you mention it? (i.e....punk, classic, funk rock, etc.) it'd be helpful for me when making a choice.

and i'd REALLY appreciate album names. albums that you guys think that i should PURCHASE because i don't really download music. and i don't really want to spend money on a crappy album.

so...yeah. i'd appreciate that.

Transatlantic is the first band i think i'll start with since Steve did such a good job of describing them. (haha...details might help convince me)

i don't really dig punk...but are the descendents good? i've heard their name before and i guess i wouldn't mind listening to it once.

You will enjoy the Transatlantic album. The first song is somewhere around 35 minutes long. It's a great musical journey, and to play along with it will really exercise your chops in many, many styles and areas. Overall, you'd probably call it a progressive/fusion genre.

Their 2nd album "Bridge Across Forever" isn't nearly as good, IMHO, so stick with "SMPTE".
 
reel big fish, CAKE, streetlight manifesto/catch 22, 311 they're all pretty good and complicated and uh..whatever you wanted just lacking in slappage

Mark King has incredible technique and feel. He is my favorite of all the slap style players, and his finger style playing is killer too! Check out the Live at Reading DVD available from Amazon -- its really cheap too. You really have to hear the live stuff to appreciate him, believe me. He is able to play very complex lines and sing over them never missing a beat.
 
Here's some punk stuff i can think of off the top of my head.

check out the Rancid's self titles album from 1993 - many amazing lines ... he might as well be soloing ... and he's singing 1/2 the time too.

Maxwell Murder by Rancid has a sweet solo
Axiom by Rancid on self titled 2000 album has a sick solo

Mass G from Squirtgun has a nice solo on "Make it Wreck" off the Fade to Bright album

i dunno why I cant think of more. but there's a butt load on my iPod somewhere ... ill edit this as they come on

man...i could NOT find any Level 42 or Transatlantic albums. i went to like...3 used music stores, and the only way i can get any album is if i order it. Can you guys suggest more dvds and albums for these bands?

any other slappers? thanks. haha.

i also picked up the Mars Volta de-loused album, and i'm listening to it, and it's a pretty cool album. not the most outstanding bass lines, but good listening. i'm only on the 3rd track though.

pretty damn cheap.
i also found smpte, but it would have cost me more than the dvd, so i think i'll wait for it...heh heh.
steve, if you have an mp3 of that first track, i would appreciate it so i can see if i really like it.

Are the Descendents good? You wouldn't MIND listening to it ONCE?!? YOU ARE NOT WORTHY! Seriously though, if you want bass solos, as far as I'm concerned every song Karl Alverez plays on is pretty much his own personal bass solo.

If you really wanna hear stand-out bass, then skip the Descendents and go for the All material. I'd say go for the first two albums (Allroy Sez and Allroy's Revenge) which are FAB, and seeing as you say you "don't really dig punk" I'd say that wouldn't matter in this case, because IMHO they don't really sound like what many would consider as being 'punk'. Hell, buy the 'Best Of' ALL. As for the Descendents, they are AWESOME, but Karl only played on the latter album(s) for them, so the bass doesn't 'stand out' as much in the earlier material. Find 7 Seconds "Out The Shizzy" and crank up the bass. Steve Youth is 'the man'.

Is it just me, or is it near impossible to suggest something as personal as music to someone you don't even know? I may love it, but you may hate it. Can't really win here methinks :) It's all down to personal preference.

Heard some of that Mars Volta stuff last night, with Fruisciante on guitar. Nice.
